d0gbreath beat me to it. So I guess its okay for the current Indians to claim Colorado Springs.
If they can take and hold it. Every part of the world that populated has been taken from someone. Every race has lost and gained land. For some idiotic reason most people act like the native Americans were the first it happened to. Or that it was some rare thing. Hell, even native American tribes took land from others. It's no different.

So I guess that makes everything okay. I'm sure the holocaust survivors will be happy to know that.

The western expansion was not genocide (driven by such motivation), it was bloody land grabbing.

You are right I probably wouldn't, at least not as an introduction but that is my point. Its used as a pejorative that you wouldn't use in public. Why is it okay to use as a team name?

I wouldn't use most team names in public. If I saw a very tall person I wouldn't say "Hey Giant" either. Let's change the name of the Giants.

I have a good story about the "Giants". When I was young we kept telling my younger brother we were going to see the Mets and Giants play at Shea stadium. He was 4 or 5 at the time. So we get to the stadium and show him the players on the field. The orange and gray are the Giants and the blue and white are the Mets. After looking over the field for a few minutes he says.....

They're not so big. :D

That made me smile. Very cute! And yeah, they aren't that big. Especially the football ones (my personal favorites).

Anyway I know the point you were getting at. Most team names are just representative of something, but most of them aren't really intended to insult of defame a group unless it's an obvious mean use of a slur that is commonly used, like the "n" word, or even words that don't make me cringe even though I don't use them, like spic and wop and sand jockey, etc.

Yeah, probably...

Imagine the hell there'd be if there were a team named "Blackskins". Just because there are fewer people who identify themselves as Native American* doesn't mean they don't deserve the same consideration a larger group would get. And I think we can all agree that "Blackskins" wouldn't last long.

* Worded that way since there are many Native American descendants who are probably so far enough removed in culture and skin tone that they don't really care.

Just let me know when you start complaining about all the other expansions and wars when land was taken or lost. That way you at least aren't a hypocrite.

All I did was mention that we took the Indians land and committed a few atrocities along the way in my post about changing the name. You got bent out of shape because I mentioned it as if it doesn't deserve a second thought. Damn I wish I could post that line from the Princess Bride, I do think it means what you think it means with the picture like its been done. Oh well, acknowledging the FACT that we took their land and treated them poorly with out acknowledging every other type of atrocity doesn't make me a hypocrite. You trying to rationalize it away as something inevitable makes you look ignorant. Have a wonderful evening.

But they got casinos. Pretty sweet deal, imo.

Not enough of them. Many live quite poorly with alcoholism a major problem. I would like to visit the Grand Canyon (I think) where they built a clear bridge/shelf where you can walk off the cliff. Looks cool.

For those of you that think the team should change it's name, should the state of Indiana change it's name as well?

I think it should be changed and until it is the owner of the Redskins won't see one red cent of my money.

I don't think the government should force the guy to change he's team's name, but neither would I be too upset if they did. There are certainly worse uses for government than bullying idiots.
Why do I sense that you already don't spend one red cent on anything Redskins?

The only reason I'd like to see it changed is just because I'm ****ing tired of hearing about it. Should it be changed because it's wrong? No. This isn't a question of right and wrong.
That's the worst reason to change it. All it does is send a message to every fringe group that they can get what they want by simply wearing everyone else down.

Prediction: The NFL will not force the team to change the name. However, should it ever come up for sale at any time in the future a name change will be a condition of approval by the league.

The name "Indiana" doesn't imply any particular skin color, so not on those grounds.

Of course, with so many people from India having immigrated to the states, the name "Indiana" is now kind of outdated. Maybe just call it "Hoosieria" or something...

The color of skin is not what they are complaining about.

There are many other teams that have a request for a name change and they have nothing to do with the color of someones skin.

How ridiculous should we get?

Indiana means "Land of the Indians". I don't know what could possibly be offensive about that, except for referring to them as Indians because the white man was an idiot and thought he was on the other side of the world when he named them that...

The color of skin is not what they are complaining about.

Then what exactly are they complaining about?

There are many other teams that have a request for a name change and they have nothing to do with the color of someones skin.

Okay. Then judge them on their own merits or demerits.

What is offensive about the name Braves?

What is offensive about the name Braves?

I don't think that name's offensive.
However I could easily see other marketing material making a caricature of Native American culture, which would more likely be offensive.
