Some days I wonder...

Seriously though, I believe common sense is nothing more than the ability through observation to correlate causality.

Some people are phenomenal at it others....eh, not so much...

I think this is probably the best answer so far.

it's the word "common" that defines it. It's common. It's the amount of sense that the average person has, not the elite.

Being open minded and rational isn't common.
Is it impossible for common sense to be uncommon? Maybe it was poorly named. Common knowledge isn't common either. Common sense is quite rare.

Very enlightening response. Not sure why you wasted both our time with that one. Care to expound? I'm fine if you don't by the way. No disrespect intended, I just don't care that much at this time.

I actually don't care that much either... but as one that works in the education field I find his comment incorrect. That is not how things work...

Have you ever met anyone who believes that they don't have common sense? It's as common as people are.

I believe that most people misinterpret the meaning of the phrase. It's common, just like it says, and it's not necessarily an informed opinion and doesn't necessarily involve rational thought or logic - most of the time it's an emotional response. We don't want to admit that common sense it's rational thought because if we did that, then we would be admitting that we don't think rationally.

Considering that half of Americans have a double digit IQ, if there is such a thing as common sense its rather dumb.

99% of people feel that they're thinking rationally when they're actually just feeling.

I would say that common sense involves the ability to see what is there instead of listening to people who tell you what is there.

To the bolded: seriously? Yikes. Pretty concerning.

Only if other other half have single digit, rather than triple digit, IQs. ;)

The scary part is that even if you are of exactly the median IQ then half of those that you share the roadways (and voting booths) with are dumber than you are.

Common sense doesn't strongly correlate with IQ. Some people with less intelligence have common sense and some brilliant people don't have it.

It doesn't necessarily correlate. I work with a lot of eggheads, and I wonder how some manage to dress themselves because they're that lacking in common sense (which isn't that common). Generally, the ones who do have it also work with their hands or grew up or live in the country. I used not to have much common sense either, but then I moved to the country. This will smarten you up right fast. ;)

Supposedly 96% of the population has an IQ between 90-110. 2% above and 2% below that...

Someone told me that 93.7869% of all statistics are made up.

For the population in general...

For me it is around 99.993%

Since 100 is average, it follows that half of the population falls at 99 and below, thus, half the population has double digit IQ. I think that applies to everyone, not just Americans.

When people accuse another person of lacking common sense they aren't referencing their incorrect math calculations. The topic of this thread is common sense.
