Jews have been hated so long it's become a tradition. My great grandfather hated Jews, my grandfather hated Jews, my father hates Jews....should I hate Jews because it's tradition?

If something is a tradition, should laws reflect it?

*note: my family actually doesn't hate Jews, this is just for argument's sake

EDIT: Haha, brain fart in the poll question.

So in other words, you expect people to treat something real as equitable to something that you acknowledge to be imaginary.

How is Jew hating imaginary? How about we consult the population of Israel, especially the Holocaust survivors to see if they agree with you that Jew hating is imaginary.

There are days when I think you're deliberately trying to destroy your reputation.

Your family's tradition of Jew hatred is imaginary.

Ever heard of an example?

"His people are completely literal. Metaphors are gonna go over his head." ―Rocket Raccoon
"Nothing goes over my head! My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it." - Drax

Comes to mind.

Notice that paleo won't vote. Interesting.

No, of course not.. Actually, back in the first few decades of the 20th century, it was very much a tradition in this county to hate and not associate with Jews..It seems ridiculous now, but accepted at one time. It was sort of an unwritten law, especially among the higher echelan of society. Totally ridiculous.

Thank God....

Jewish humor is very good and the Jews I have known were more fun than you would believe. The less talented might find that good reason to hate them, I guess.

India's caste system is a centuries-old tradition, but in recent times the country has made it illegal to discriminate based on caste.

Do you think that's a bad thing?

Like anything else, it depends on the tradition or practice. In many ways, however, I fundamentally agree with the idea that public policy should reflect American principles and traditions. This allows me, however, to engage in a debate as to which principle and tradition should be valued over another in matters of policy.

That I think it's bad that the law no longer supports the caste system? No, but it's more of a shame that the law itself hasn't made a big impact upon actual discrimination of lower castes.

Much like anything else, tradition is fine so long as observing it doesn't infringe upon the liberties of others or break the law in the process. And as such, it would follow that there would be no reason for the law to interfere with observation of that manner.

This OP brings to mind an old Navy saying regarding the Navy; "150 years of tradition uninterrupted by progress."
That is a real good place to start when discussing tradition.

If it has intrinsic, still relevant value, then it can stand on its own merits and "because that's the way we always did it" is no longer be the basis for the law.

So? Merely I'm using it as an argumentative tool does not mean it that Jew hating isn't real or a tradition.

So if a specific family has a tradition of hating Jews, then there tradition is wrong and should be abandoned.

Jew hatred (or hatred of any group of people) is of course contrary to the Christian tradition which helped build our society.

Good traditions good, bad traditions bad, knowing the difference...priceless.

Honestly I don't see how any one calling themselves christian could hate jews, are Lord was after all a Jew? It never made sense to me.

Jew hating is very complex. Many democrats have a long history of hating both blacks AND Jews, yet for some reason, both blacks and Jews seem to vote dominantly democrat. When democrats suddenly flipped their script to better exploit black votes, they supported legislative changes that while pretending to be 'for' blacks, they have had the ultimate result of completely devastating black families and communities. At the same time, Democrats (and a large number of liberals in general) get absolutely frothy venting their hatred of Jews (oh...wait...sorry...they call it "hating Israel, not Jews") when they have finally had enough of the day to day attacks on Israel by Palestinians while those same liberals and democrats COMPLETELY ignore the daily attacks on Israel by Palestinians. Complicated. Perhaps there is something to the whole love hate thing.

Or it could just be 'tradition'...

I "get" where the OP was going, but I struggle with calling the hatred of a particular group or person/persons as a "tradition".

If my great grandfather beat his wife, and my grandfather beat his wife, and my father beat his wife, I'm not sure I'd call it a family tradition. I'd call it more a family problem.

By the way, I voted "No" in the poll.

Someone didn't read "The Lottery".
