Many people have called for Hoovers name to be removed from the FBI building because of his controversial tactics as FBI director. Politicians have called it a "stain on democracy" etc. Do you believe it should be removed?

Love him or hate him Hoover helped make and is part of US history. His name should stay. There are soooo many more important things to quibble over than this.

No. A resounding no. He built the FBI. Took it from nothing to the arguably best crime investigation organization in the world. Do I agree with his tactics? No. Do I respect him as a person? Not really - he was nuts and vindictive and a megalomaniac. Did he do what no one else was able to do in creating the FBI because of those awful traits I listed? Yes.

Now, if you want to talk about dismantling parts of the FBI (instead of just changing their sign) or putting a very strong leash around their neck to prevent them from infringing on our liberty... that I would be glad to talk about.

But, if we're gonna keep the FBI, then keep the name of the guy that created it on the building. It's a sign that reflects their culture.

Who are the Polititians making such statements?

I am not a fan of Hoover, but his importance in history and to the FBI cannot be overstated. If we only pay tribute to perfect people, we won't be paying tribute to any one.

Hoover institutionally was the FBI.

Sans an answer to post #4, I assume the OP statement is manufactured internet BS; the question then arises.... Who manufactured the statement. the OP or others ??

Just wondering

I could care less.

They can call it the 'Transvestite Playground' for all I care.

I know that Hoover was involved in a lot of controversies and he's not one of my favorite people, but the man is dead and buried and I think that we have better things to talk about and spend money on.

As others have said he made the FBI what it is today.

If we only honored perfect people there would be few monuments built.

Thanks for the reply.. re-instills faith..:)

Did a little research... at present there appears to be about six members of
congress with too much free time. We should remind them of more important matters at hand.

The U.S profited greatly by Hoover being in his position; we learned much. He built a considerable organization that has, overall, been of positive benefit; he also taught us to keep a watchful eye on such organizations.. another positive. He was a man of his times. He did what he believed needed done.

It is bizarre to attempt to scrub history from our memories by eradicating public awareness of individuals and eras.

Hoover should stay.. to remind us of all the good he did and also warn us of unintended consequences of nearly all well intended actions.

Have a good day DS

This should come down first IMHO.

Even though I know it's named after dad, dad, daddio, I can't help but think of Dubya. Hardly the guy I'd think of when naming the "Center for Intelligence" Every time I passed that sign on the GW Parkway I laugh my ass off.

No more than JFK's or LBJ's names should be removed from government buildings and I'm no fan of J Edgar. They too left their own stains on democracy. Hoover did some great things for the FBI, really brought it in to the modern era.

W wasn't half as smart as his old man. HW was a damn smart guy. I can see why you'd laugh.

It should be called the Obama Administration for truth and Justice.
