    Definitely creepy to me.
Oh, I agree. It doesn't help that my siblings and I think the woman is absolutely nuts and we can't stand her. My father is just ... strange.

Actually, I deleted it because I posted it before I read that they started dating in their 50's.

Though I still think that is strange...I guess by their 50's the dynamic has changed.

But if you think she is nuts...maybe I should have stick with my first thought.

    Speaking of strange.

My mother married a guy 2 years older then her, then her next hubby (my Dad) was about 17 years older then her and then her last hubby (nice guy but bisexual?!?) was about 17 years younger then her.

    Talk about strange.

I loved my mother very much (she is dead now)...but she was 'different'.

Personally I think large age-gap marriages have serious issues due to generational gaps and usually they don't last very long.

I'm also a bit concerned about having a third party making marital decisions for someone else. What kind of things does that open us up to? What if the parents pressure the child into marrying someone they don't want?

So like I said, I just want to see some consistency. Are you an adult at 16 or at 18? Why can parents override the law for something as big as marriage but they can't for just about anything else?

The only time it ever gets remotely "icky" is when we listen to old music together & do the "What/Where were you then?" routine...

I find it hilarious! I tease him endlessly with those questions. "1985? Let's see... I was 20." My response..."I was in 3rd grade!"

I always say it was the "starting-to-go-gray" hair & Boston accent... I was done for!
I was 1 year old the year he joined the Army. I tease him about that all the time. When we got together, I was 30 and he was 48. We were already adults, and had both been through really, really bad relationships before. We knew what it was like to have it bad, so neither of us was going to let our age difference get in the way of a fantastic relationship otherwise.

He has told me, "I wish I'd met you when we were younger." I tell him, "You'd have gone to jail!!"

I agree there, I want consistancy in the age of adulthood. Either 16, 18, 21 whatever, but have it across the board.

I'm also a bit concerned about having a third party making marital decisions for someone else. What kind of things does that open us up to? What if the parents pressure the child into marrying someone they don't want?
The parents don't make the decision for someone to marry. At best they can just give legal consent so the under-age person can marry and that of course varies from state to state. Just to be clear the parents don't make it so two people HAVE to marry.

So like I said, I just want to see some consistency. Are you an adult at 16 or at 18? Why can parents override the law for something as big as marriage but they can't for just about anything else?

It's called immancipation, but I agree its not consistent.

    All marriage should be banned.

No, and when I was 16 I didn't find older men to be "icky". I doubt any 16 year olds find my husband "icky". He doesn't drool or wear adult diapers.

I don't care one way or another...live and let live, as long as neither party is underage they can make their own decisions.
