The Nixon pardon seems to be his biggest liability, legacy-wise. But, he's also hampered by two other factors... a short term and never actually being elected.

Three things that are not small, but at the same time he didn't seem to do anything wrong, other than the pardon depending on your point-of-view, and he was the right guy at the right time... somebody plain and boring not stirring up more controversy and drama.

He was a good man, IMO. Smart, likeable, had a lot going for him. I think he was also very human.

Was he a good President? Hard to say, since he didn't do it for long, and doG knows he came in under bad circumstances.

The worst thing I think he did? Pick Nelson Rockefeller as his VP. The Nixon pardon doesn't bother me one bit.

Overall he governed competently and did no serious harm. That's about as kind as we can get for his brief tenure as POTUS. The one thing I cannot forgive him for is his executive order that prevented our military for returning to take their Vietnamese comrades out of the embassy in Saigon on the last day of our involvement in the Vietnam War. They knew the North Vietnamese were closing in and Ford was afraid the rescue choppers that took our people out of Saigon would come under attack any minute. But as the last chopper lifted, full to capacity, those on it still have visions of their Vietnamese friends, in their yellow raincoats, watching them leave fully expecting the choppers would return to take them too. These would be the first brutally slaughtered when the Vietcong entered Saigon many hours later. We had plenty of time to get everybody out but Ford panicked.

Nixon resigned, ultimately for suggesting to the IRS that they audit his political enemies. The IRS refused, but the implication so infuriated men like Barry Goldwater that they vowed to impeach. Ah the old days, when integrity existed.

Obama has done what Nixon suggested. But no resignation, and not a single dim threatening impeachement. Integrity - something democrats don't engage in - ever.

Ford was right to pardon Nixon. Nixon was a choir boy compared to the crook who is now in the White House. Ford was a barely passable president, but he got the pardon right.

It was a lousy hand he was dealt. Being stopgap is never great, but does wonders for your pension. And considering it all, we were lucky with him.

Sure, I guess.

And so were Stephen Pontiac, Robert Dodge and Marvin Chevrolet...and the rarely remembered David GMC.

The only problem I had with Robert "Bobby" Dodge is that is was impossible to pin him down on any issue.
