Should All Police Have to Wear Body Cameras?

Precincts that have adopted use of cameras have seen a significant reduction in police abuses. It certainly seems like a good idea.

Is this different than Maggie's poll?

It would be helpful in having actual video of an arrest perhaps. But even though I don't do anything illegal I sure wouldn't want to have to wear a camera all day at work.

Who here wouldn't mind having their whole day video taped? You can't even fart in private.

I guess I vote Yes, but there is just something about it that bothers me a little.

Absolutely. And before they are allowed duty they need to sign an agreement stating that if the camera "malfunctions", becomes hindered in any way, or "happens" to not catch the incident they are being accused, for any reason, they are instantly guilty.

And on top of that ALL people working as a representative of the government should have to conform to 100% monitorization during their terms so the public can sift through their actions to look for suspicious action. (bribes, conspiracy, whatever)

That would pretty much weed out all the bad politicians and usher in a new era of accountability.

Plus it would be sexy to watch the female representatives take a shower. :D

It would raise a ****storm at first but eventually viable people will sift into the positions. People that will willingly sacrifice their privacy to help their country. If you dont like it. Dont take the job.

Should All Police Have to Wear Body Cameras?

Hey DemSocialist :2wave

I absolutely do. Video cameras create accountability where there otherwise is none. Courts are trained to hold the word of a cop above the word of anyone else. Having the ability to access complete video of all encounters a cop has in a day would be a huge win for justice.

Until that day comes, however, we still can and should hold our officers accountable by filming our interactions with them. It is your right to film them, don't let them tell you otherwise. If something goes terribly wrong, there is video evidence of what happened. It will keep both you and your community safer and most people already have the technology to do it with their smartphones anyway.

Heck, why not have cameras at the business end of each firearm as well.

Like those laser or flashlight things added under the barrel, they would get a camera instead.

Just think, preventing one or two major lawsuits would easily pay for the equipment(per city).

Abso-frickin-lutely.

An additional option I don't see in these conversations is that idea of real time remote monitoring of the officer for support and oversight.

Imagine a command center with officers watching the officers, and stepping in with advice, information, or backup when appropriate. It wouldn't necessarily be very expensive, as at any given moment few would need more than passive monitoring.

Only if all suspects must wear them as well. Why should the word of the arrested count without video back-up but not the word of the arresting officer?

Only if you're going to force all people everywhere to wear them. I trust the police a lot more than I trust 99% of the population.

Well officers are in a position of trust and you have some douche-bags who pad their reports like this guy.

When cops falsify reports and lie it becomes extra sinister, everyone knows crooks lie. Most people think cops wouldn't. So we need extra measures of security. The burden of proving crap needs to fall on the cops and their word isn't enough. Average Joe doesn't go around falsely imprisoning people. A cop may.

Definitely. I heard they actually tend to exonerate the officer most of the time.

That's true. Cops wearing cameras tends to protect the cops more than anyone else.

Here is one example of live video technology for ya.

I would think in the future, facial recognition features would help as well.

Like the fella who doesn't want to show ID on a street stop wouldn't be a problem anymore. The camera the officer is wearing should have already identified the individual.

We already have automatic vehicle license plate recognition up and running.

Good stuff there, very helpful, just don't be a criminal or a crooked cop aye.

Thats pretty nice. But I recommend they install a new "dome" camera on the top that literally records EVERYTHING, with zero blind spots. Then you can use software to access a specific portion of viewing that would be readable to the conventional human eye. (turning the panoramic "dome" capture into 1 square picture as if viewed from a conventional perspective) Because the human brain wouldnt be able to comprehend 360 degrees of info so easily.

Or use software to divvy out the "dome" camera captures into 4,5 or 6 quadrants all on 1 viewing screen.

I guess this is cheaper and useful though. Better than just 1 dashcam which cops seem to love parking askew and not record the incident.

we petition the obama administration to:
Mike Brown Law. Requires all state, county, and local police to wear a camera.

Create a bill, sign into law, and set aside funds to require all state, county, and local police, to wear a camera. Due to the latest accounts of deadly encounters with police, We the People, petition for the Mike Brown Law. Create a bill, sign into law, and set aside funds to require all state, county, and local police, to wear a camera. The law shall be made in an effort to not only detour police misconduct(i.e. brutality, profiling, abuse of power), but to ensure that all police are following procedure, and to remove all question, from normally questionable police encounters. As well, as help to hold all parties within a police investigation, accountable for their actions.

.....A camera is not bias. Unedited, raw video cannot lie. If a suspect fights or is compliant will be on the video. This will leave very little for the arguments of if it was necessary force or not.

Many departments would love to use these cameras but budget issues prevent them from buying. By signing this executive order the president is mandating departments buy them now.

The order does have language in it to open up grant monies for police chief’s to access to make some initial purchases of body cameras. Once the initial grant dollars are gone the White House expects police chiefs to get creative with their budgets to make sure all officers have individual cameras by next year.....

But if the cops were wearing them, they'be capturing the actions of the suspect as well.

Neither one is being filmed or can be held accountable on video *before contact.* (unless there are other cameras on site, of course.)
