    Demographics and political affiliation.

    Simple Poll.

Throw a question in with it to perhaps spur conversation.

Do you think that gerrymandering of districts should be made illegal for both parties, and be left up to independent commissions? Or should we adopt proportional representation?

Before the war is ended, the war party assumes the divine right to denounce and silence all opposition to war as unpatriotic and cowardly.

God, how patient are Thy poor! These corporations and masters of manipulation in finance heaping up great fortunes by a system of legalized extortion,
and then exacting from the contributors--to whom a little means so much--a double share to guard the treasure!

This assumes that individuals within certain groups think alike. I believe this is a valid assumption for developing advertising and marketing campaigns in order to woo voters. I do not believe, however, that representative districts should be drawn with that in mind. Each vote represents an individual's opinion and when gerrymandered into a certain district to ensure group representation, those individuals that disagree are disenfranchised. Districts should be drawn on a grid starting at a center point within the capital city of each state, randomly capturing whosoever resides within the grid.

YES, gerrymandering should be illegal! But that's something the GOP would never allow, because they know what would happen as a result.

For instance, an independent commission now determines the voting districts in California...and now California's a truly blue state with Dem supermajorities...and now California has a budget surplus.

(Compare that to what happened in supermajority-red Kansas where they slashed taxes...and their job creation is near the bottom in the nation and their credit rating has since been downgraded by Moody's)

California independent commission my ass. Iowa BY FAR has the best system for determining districts. Its based on population alone and is computerized. Their districts are about as square as can be with people dispersed about a non square state. There are no snake looking districts. NONE of the political parties get a say in how the districts are draw and they are draw without regard to political affiliation. They only get to vote the resulting map up or down.
