Being in the service and playing pro sports are two very different things.

Re: Do you agree or disagree with Tony Dungys's comments about gay player Michael Sam

Here is the deal....Dungy's comments were not yesterday, they were made during that time from the draft to when Sam's realized a reality show about his career was a bad idea. In that context I totally understand Dungy's point. But the bigger issue is some of the things that Dungy himself has been involved with and that calls into question the motivation of the quote.

    1. Dungy himself was the victim of discrimination in the NFL with the excuse of hire a black head coach would be a distraction including a media distraction. So he could consider this, but by no means has to.
    2. Dungy was outspoken on gay marriage as an opponent including backing an Indiana attempt to write a harsh amendment to the State Constitution that would make even civil unions illegal in Indiana. That is not only his right but is part of his larger belief system in how he sees his Christianity. (I want to be clear I am on the other side of that issue and frankly think his vision is a bad view of Christianity but that is not my call, it is his).
    3. Dungy has been the go to guy for clearly bad behavior of players in the NFL to go to rehab their image and in some cases change. His full-throated support of Michael Vick, which not only meant he was willing to deal with a media but a larger PR distraction including protests and advertiser issues didn't seem to be a problem. (I understand the difference, Vick and Sams are two radically different levels of talent).

Dungy is one of the best over-all coaches of the last 20 years. He created the Tampa Bay team that won the Superbowl under Grudin and his work in Indy was brilliant. His further reach into the soul of the NFL and the communities that he has touched. I don't agree with him on many things but he has a good heart even when that leads him down a path I don't particularly think is healthy for our culture or is actually hurtful.

As for Sams, I am not an NFL scout, he had talent no doubt, but many college guys have great talent in college and can't compete in the NFL. I think fear of distraction, some bigotry and his horrible combine led to his stock falling. The pick up in St. Louis was a easy call for the team and frankly if he makes the practice squad or special teams that would be great. He isn't going to start unless he shows something we haven't seen yet in training camp.

You realize if he had a Manzel personality or Vick talent (back in the day not now) the conversation would be totally different and he would be worth the distraction. In fact I think Dungy would say he would take him then. But then I don't know.

They are the same types of locker rooms. Are you saying that men in the military don't act like men who play pro sports? I'm willing to bet that you are wrong there.

I would take that bet. Guys in the service don't usually give interviews on national TV.

Which makes a difference how in the way they behave while in the locker room when no one is in there?

Pretty much the same argument was made by those against repealing DADT "but the straight men will have to share the locker rooms with gay men". So what? It doesn't matter. The public knows that the military straight men are sharing locker rooms with gay men. And since the repeal of DADT, several gay men and women in the service have openly revealed their sexuality on TV, to reporters, in public.

Millions of fans across the nation don't haul our their favorite "military fan gear", buy season tickets, travel to games for guys in the military.
But they do it for their favorite football teams.

Which has absolutely zero to do with what goes on in the locker rooms.

Re: Do you agree or disagree with Tony Dungys's comments about gay player Michael Sam

the point of the OP i think, is Michael Sam going to be a distraction for his team?

And was Tony Dungy right in calling that point out

    I say yes to both

The first openly gay player in the NFL is a big thing.....i think the media will make it more of a distraction than the team will....but it "could" hurt the team

Michael Sam played for my team, the Missouri Tigers last year. He lit up the SEC quarterbacks, and was named to numerous all SEC teams

Sometimes college success easily transitions to the pro's.....sometimes not

I hope he makes the team....and i hope all the hoopla is dead before the end of the first 4 games

Then we can settle back and just watch a terrific young man try to contribute to a team in the best division in football

All the rest dont mean a damn thing.....

And then maybe the next time, it will be a few paragraphs in the teams program....not national coverage just because someone is gay
