Pure populism. If you abolish the IRS, you have to replace them with another agency to do the exact same thing, so there is zero net gain.

An agency as corrupt as the IRS has become cannot be salvaged.

Best would be to change the tax structure, so that we do not need nearly so big and powerful an agency to collect it.

But even short of that, I think we at least need to abolish the existing agency, and, if necessary, create a new agency; with employees of the IRS not being eligible to be employed in any government agency. As many as can be properly prosecuted of the existing IRS staff need to be tried, convicted, and sentenced to hard jail time.

Let the fate of the IRS and its employees stand as an example and a warning to those who wind up employed in the new agency that takes its place. We need to demonstrate a zero-tolerance policy toward that kind of corruption.

Hear, hear. Make tax policy simple, and easy, so that no one is ever confused on what they owe.

Not only should we abolish the IRS but abolish income tax for both individuals and corporations. Replace with an annual flat tax.

We might want lower taxes but to eliminate the IRS because of illegal activities is the wrong way. It has to be better controlled. We could begin with a requirement that all activities be recorded so that misbehavior can be quickly and immediately identified.

What appears to possibly be the only provable part of the current IRS scandal is that exactly such records have been destroyed.

No, U.S. taxes need to be simplified but you still still the IRS.

We need a form of the IRS, but not *the* IRS as it currently operates.

That is a problem. Of course, the amount of recording was too little in the first place and the consequences for those who should have had to have the recordings are too small.
