Should We Abolish The IRS?

Pure populism. If you abolish the IRS, you have to replace them with another agency to do the exact same thing, so there is zero net gain.

An agency as corrupt as the IRS has become cannot be salvaged.

Best would be to change the tax structure, so that we do not need nearly so big and powerful an agency to collect it.

But even short of that, I think we at least need to abolish the existing agency, and, if necessary, create a new agency; with employees of the IRS not being eligible to be employed in any government agency. As many as can be properly prosecuted of the existing IRS staff need to be tried, convicted, and sentenced to hard jail time.

Let the fate of the IRS and its employees stand as an example and a warning to those who wind up employed in the new agency that takes its place. We need to demonstrate a zero-tolerance policy toward that kind of corruption.

Hear, hear. Make tax policy simple, and easy, so that no one is ever confused on what they owe.

Not only should we abolish the IRS but abolish income tax for both individuals and corporations. Replace with an annual flat tax.

We might want lower taxes :) but to eliminate the IRS because of illegal activities is the wrong way. It has to be better controlled. We could begin with a requirement that all activities be recorded so that misbehavior can be quickly and immediately identified.

What appears to possibly be the only provable part of the current IRS scandal is that exactly such records have been destroyed.

No, U.S. taxes need to be simplified but you still still the IRS.

That is a problem. Of course, the amount of recording was too little in the first place and the consequences for those who should have had to have the recordings are too small.

Not that I can ever remember.

Should we abolish the IRS?
No. Change the laws, simplify the tax code, and file the IRS' fangs down to the gum by restricting their power to harm people and not have to answer for their actions? Oh yeah.

To lure in all the people who don't stop and think for a minute.

A flat tax is much more punitive to the poor. So no, I don't agree with that.

I could see the logic behind narrowing the tax brackets and their relative rates of taxation.

The only way a flat tax would be remotely approaching fair would be to also eliminate all tax deductions, but retaining the EITC.

Yeah, you got a few million CPA's and tax lawyers that won't let that see the light of day...

I do agree with Gary Johnson on some things ... I'd consider voting for him if he was not a Republican.

Abolishing the IRS is not something I would do. Someone has to collect taxes, someone has to make sure people are not cheating on them, someone has to report revenue to the federal government, unless we're not going to have a federal government. As Redress said, if the IRS is wiped out of existence, who does it?

Having voted for him last go around and despite disagreeing with him on a few issues I still think he's the best person out there.

As for the IRS I have to agree with Redress, pouring syrup on shyte don't make it pancakes...

Well, that's definitely true, the "complexity" of the tax code does keep a lot of people employed. WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL JOBS, KITCHER :2razz:

An extremely poor idea ...imagine the tax load on the poor(primarily) and the middle class ..
And I question ..Is the IRS corrupt ?
My own experience .. NO

Abolish entirely? No.

But now that they've made my defense of them in the last few years look like total tripe I do question their capacity to - well - do anything they're supposed to do.

I don't' support the construct of the IRS.

I opposed everyone who followed along with the rotten leaders.

Easy: Lawyers are scum ;)

Hey, c'mon. My stepfather is a lawyer. He does mostly family law, real estate, estates, stuff like that. He used to run the mock trial at a local high school, for free. He worked in legal aid. He's done pro bono work the likes of which you'd never fathom.

They're not all bad, man.

Reminds me of a joke:

How many lawyers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None, lawyers only screw us.

I jest. Lots of lawyers are great. I've had to work with them, pleasantly. But I'd certainly be happy if more left the field, it'd make finding a job in the legal progression so much easier...

Reducing the tax code wouldn't put every lawyer out of work. CPAs might reduce, but lots of other professions go away over time. People change jobs. When's the last time you saw a shoe shiner? Or what about physical newspapers that are dying out? There's nothing wrong with change.

HAY. I actually still produce physical newspapers! Somewhat.

If everyone cant pay their share then its time to look into reducing taxes in general then.
