I hear people throwing around the term 'mainstream media' all the time, but I'm never quite sure what that means exactly. Does mainstream mean available to everyone, free to consume? Does it mean that media controlled by just the largest half-dozen media corporations? Or does it mean the media that receives the greatest viewership/listeners/readership?

Here's a poll with a list of media sources. Please vote for those which you believe to members of that 'mainstream media' club. Should be interesting to see how different people interpret the term.

It is quite difficult I find to be very precise. But I would generally say that mass production like Huffington, NYT, or WP are as mainstream as NPR, Fox or CNN. I do not think I would probably include Foreign Affairs or even Foreign Policy Magazine. Probably I would include The Economist, though, it is UK. The same is true for international broadcasters like CNBC, France24, Aljeezera or BBC, but definitely not RT.

I chose options 1 & 2. I missed one I would have added, which was National daily and weekly press.
