I have been to every city on the list except New York. That said without a doubt my pick is Chicago. Been there about a dozen times for work and I dread going there every time. Overcrowded, rude, dirty, ruthless people. On top of all that the politicians are the absolute worst in the country. If it wasn't for Chicago, downstate Illinois would be very prosperous.

Obviously there are some exceptions as I have some very good friends that live there. They seem to love it so good on them. But as far as that list goes Chicago is the last place I would want to spend any time whatsoever.

Well at least it has Graceland. What does Detroit have?
Graceland to me just felt too cheesy... But yes Memphis has that. Oh and that hotel with the ducks.

Memphis is a hole. It is the Detroit of the south. Beale Street area is okay though. But if I am visiting Tennessee... Nashville is my preference.

It was a joke based on the song-ya know?

No one lives in Houston.

Seriously, with a few exceptions like the Heights or off the SW Freeway there are very few places to live here.

People typically live in the outlying cities like Katy, Woodlands or even Pearland and then drive in.

Over 2.1 million people live within the city of Houston.

Never go to Chicago or Detroit - Check!

It's not politically correct to say but Chicago is a great city when you stay within predominately white neighborhoods.

You know, I voted Chicago, because the crime is just unbelievable there. I just don't understand -- people who live in Chicago seem to love Chicago. How can a city be that well loved, yet that steeped in crime?

One reason is the people who you're likely to run into on internet forums aren't the ones who live in the high crime areas.

Another reason is many people who say they're from Chicago aren't really residents of Chicago but the Chicagoland area. They live in the suburbs and either commute into work or come into the city on the weekend and spend their leisure time in the Loop area, the part of the city where tourists visit, the downtown area. Many people, people here in IL even think that that downtown area is the city of Chicago. Not knowing that the city itself is about 28 miles long going north and south and about 5-7 miles wide.

Every time I tell people I'm from Chicago they say, "Oh yeah? What suburb?" One time, I was in Oregon and I had to show the guy my actual Driver's License showing I had a Chicago address because he wasn't buying that I lived there. LOL

A couple weeks ago I was introduced to a couple who asked me this very question, repeatedly explaining, only to have them finally assure ME that I lived where I had told them I live. "Oh yeah, you guys are in the city" ??? I mean WTF? LOL

A lot of imports who came from the surrounding states, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana who came here for jobs, for a change from Pu'Dunk. Revel in the city's history, it's culture, it's mystique... It's a badge of pride to say you live in Chicago. You see the change in a person's demeanor, the awe when you tell them you're from Chicago. I don't understand it, but I find it amusing. It's like either your a bad ass, a Bad Bad Leroy Brown, or they think you're super wealthy living the highlife... It inspires the imagination I suppose...

As for the crime, well, you get desensitized to it. I live in a pretty affluent area, lots of politicians, city and state, high ranking city officials, lots of police presence and in the 5 years here, we've had car break ins, burglaries, weirdos and what not, but all in all it's a good neighborhood. You just "know". No matter how safe it seems, this is the city.

I myself love Chicago. Always will. Do I appreciate it now as much as I did when I moved here from the South Subs 12+ years ago? No. I'm older now and I don't need to be "on the scene" like I use to, but I will defend this city and all that it is until the day I die. Why? Because it's my city.

You have to live here I suppose to "get it".

I know it's a bit off topic but Barrow in Furness is Britain's worst town.

There was very stiff competition for that crown as well.

Anyone who votes for Chicago is either a partisan hack or doesn't travel much. Personally I would be torn between Detroit and Memphis... Chicago is a wonderful city and nobody would care about it if it were not for the Obama Derangement Syndrome some have.

Never been to Detroit but lived about a year in Memphis fresh out of GED graduation, in the hood, "what's up my neighbor". Apt broken into, car stolen. I hate Memphis, and pretty much all concrete jungles.

Over 2.1 million people live within the city of Houston.

Lets see, there's East Houston which are illegals, Southwest Freeway more illegals, North east which are more ghettos, North West which is also ghettos and illegals.

There's the Heights ( young professionals ) west Houston which are Liberal elites.

The majority of people who work in Houston dont live in Houston.

Again, they live in the outlying areas and city's liie Katy and the Woodlands.

Camden NJ.

If you've ever been, you'll agree.

Ok so Blacks and Hispanics don't count as people? ;) Almost every city in the USA has more people living in the suburbs than in the city itself. Houston actually has a larger proportion of its metro population living in the city limits than most cities. For example, Houston has more than a third of its metro population living in the city limits. Kansas City has only a forth in the city limits. Minneapolis has less than a fifth in its city limits. Given the traffic in Houston and commute times, if you don't have school age children, its worth paying a premium to live in the city versus dealing with being in a car 2 hours a day or more going to and from work.

Minot, ND.

Sorry Fiddy.

spent two winters there

omg...never again

state tree is a telephone pole

but i will say, the state fair in the spring was absolutely the best i have ever attended

a day in the bleachers at Wrigley watching the Cardinals makes up for a lot of the bad

Chicago is much better than some....but the gang wars are definitely causing some issues

It the complete opposite in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It started during the 1970's. Nobody who doesn't live with in Los Angeles city limits wants to be associated with Los Angeles. You either live in Manhattan Beach, Torrance, Pasadena, Long Beach, Monrovia, Santa Monica, etc. but never Los Angeles.

Then you have those unfortunate who do live with in Los Angeles and they try to distance themselves from L.A. by identifying to their neighborhoods like Westchester, Pacific Palisades, Hancock Park, North Hollywood, San Pedro, etc.

Nice post. Nice to see someone take pride in where they live. I feel that way about Syracuse. Most people absolutely hate Syracuse, but I beam with pride when I tell people I am from there, and I am forever trying to talk my husband into moving me back. I wasn't born there, I wasn't raised there, but it's home to me, and the only place that I truly love.

Yeah, I guess there's a lot of good to make up for all the bad. Just have to know where to be able to park your car. ;)

I have visited almost every single city on this list, and the only time my car was ever broken into, and anything stolen, was just outside of Houston. I've not really had much of an issue with any of these cities, but then, I don't really hang in areas that would have a lot of crime.
