It the complete opposite in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It started during the 1970's. Nobody who doesn't live with in Los Angeles city limits wants to be associated with Los Angeles. You either live in Manhattan Beach, Torrance, Pasadena, Long Beach, Monrovia, Santa Monica, etc. but never Los Angeles.

Then you have those unfortunate who do live with in Los Angeles and they try to distance themselves from L.A. by identifying to their neighborhoods like Westchester, Pacific Palisades, Hancock Park, North Hollywood, San Pedro, etc.

Basically which city should be known as America's toilet?
Maybe you would find this interesting. Detroit is number 1 on this list.

Another reason is many people who say they're from Chicago aren't really residents of Chicago but the Chicagoland area. They live in the suburbs and either commute into work or come into the city on the weekend and spend their leisure time in the Loop area, the part of the city where tourists visit, the downtown area. Many people, people here in IL even think that that downtown area is the city of Chicago. Not knowing that the city itself is about 28 miles long going north and south and about 5-7 miles wide.

Every time I tell people I'm from Chicago they say, "Oh yeah? What suburb?" One time, I was in Oregon and I had to show the guy my actual Driver's License showing I had a Chicago address because he wasn't buying that I lived there. LOL

A couple weeks ago I was introduced to a couple who asked me this very question, repeatedly explaining, only to have them finally assure ME that I lived where I had told them I live. "Oh yeah, you guys are in the city" ??? I mean WTF? LOL

A lot of imports who came from the surrounding states, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana who came here for jobs, for a change from Pu'Dunk. Revel in the city's history, it's culture, it's mystique... It's a badge of pride to say you live in Chicago. You see the change in a person's demeanor, the awe when you tell them you're from Chicago. I don't understand it, but I find it amusing. It's like either your a bad ass, a Bad Bad Leroy Brown, or they think you're super wealthy living the highlife... It inspires the imagination I suppose...

As for the crime, well, you get desensitized to it. I live in a pretty affluent area, lots of politicians, city and state, high ranking city officials, lots of police presence and in the 5 years here, we've had car break ins, burglaries, weirdos and what not, but all in all it's a good neighborhood. You just "know". No matter how safe it seems, this is the city.

I myself love Chicago. Always will. Do I appreciate it now as much as I did when I moved here from the South Subs 12+ years ago? No. I'm older now and I don't need to be "on the scene" like I use to, but I will defend this city and all that it is until the day I die. Why? Because it's my city.

You have to live here I suppose to "get it".
Nice post. Nice to see someone take pride in where they live. I feel that way about Syracuse. Most people absolutely hate Syracuse, but I beam with pride when I tell people I am from there, and I am forever trying to talk my husband into moving me back. I wasn't born there, I wasn't raised there, but it's home to me, and the only place that I truly love.

Yeah, I guess there's a lot of good to make up for all the bad. Just have to know where to be able to park your car.

I have visited almost every single city on this list, and the only time my car was ever broken into, and anything stolen, was just outside of Houston. I've not really had much of an issue with any of these cities, but then, I don't really hang in areas that would have a lot of crime.

Re: Which City is America's Worst

I grew up in Dearborn which is a pretty much all white working class suburb right next tot he west side of Detroit Michigan. I have worked in Detroit extensively and have spent countless days there taking up a good chunk of my life.

Recently I was chief of staff for a state legislator from Detroit. In two different campaigns I walked every block of the district which took up an area of about 20 or more square miles of Detroits west side.

I know the city well. If we are using crime as a barometer of how bad a city is- here is my experience.

In my entire 65 years living here I have been the victim of crime twice. Once when I was in college I went to Tiger Stadium for a game and parked on the street where somebody broke a window in my vehicle and took a jacket from the car. That happened near the downtown area. The other time was also when I was in college working as the night auditor at a hotel when we were robbed at gunpoint. That was in Dearborn.

I have been to every city on the list and have never experienced any crime while in any of them.

The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

Re: Which City is America's Worst

Here's another really interesting article about Detroit. Did you know that Detroit receives less money than Columbia and many, many other nations that we give aid to? Disgusting, really. We should be taking more of an interest and spending more money in our OWN country!!! (Some interesting pictures in this link too).

Detroit Receives Less Federal Money Than All Of These Foreign Nations (INFOGRAPHIC)

The nation of Colombia receives more federal aid than bankrupt Detroit... and it's not the only country getting more cash from the feds.

Even though the Motor City murder rate is almost twice as high as Colombia's, the federal government still sends almost three times as much money to the Latin American nation. Though several Detroiters have questioned whether a bailout is needed to save the city, the Obama Administration has made no moves to pay off any of the city's estimated $18 billion debt.

Next City Columnist Bill Bradley posted an infographic titled "Detroit vs. the World," which helpfully points out every single country around the world that receives more federal dollars than Detroit.

Re: Which City is America's Worst

personally, I picked Detroit.. because it 's a city in decay on most levels.. it's the quintessential ****hole..

but really, I can pick any big city and say "it's the worst"... primarily because I think big cities are the worst.

Watching my beloved Las Vegas turn into a big city was painful....it was a much much better place when it was a small city.
now, like every other big city.. it's impersonal, it's crime riddled, it's ugly, it has nasty ass ghettoes, barrios, and methvilles.

a small city run by the mob was simply a better place than a big city run by corporations, politicians, and all the people who don't give two ****s about anything but themselves.

**** big cities... they're all ****holes, imo
