Of the cities listed, I would not want to live in Detroit. Chicago is really nice in areas and a war zone in others. The winters would keep me from wanted to live there if I disregard things like proximity to family.

If I could live in any city listed, provided if came with a decent income I'd pick Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles or New York and maybe DC; lots of great cultural and entertainment options. I learned a while back most places are nice if you have a lot of money.

Well for better or worse money makes the world go round. Always has, always will it seems.

Memphis is not a completely failed city like Detroit is though. Memphis certainly has its problems, but it is a nice city to visit. Midtown Memphis is great (at least it was when I lived there in the late nineties, it may have gone downhill since then). On the other hand, Detroit as they say is "Like God took a dump on a parking lot".

I absolutely love Memphis, but again - I've only been in a bad area once. I was on Elvis Presley Boulevard, and the farther down you go, the more narrow it gets, and the worse the area gets. Once it turned into a two-lane, there were cars parked on the side of the road, and people sitting outside on the hoods talking, laughing, playing loud music. Off the street I was on, we heard a gunshot come from a hotel, and we got out of there pretty quickly. Found out later that someone had died in that hotel from that gunshot.

But I just stay out of the bad areas. Easy, peasy. I go to Beale Street, or Graceland, or wherever, and we have no problems. Amazing music, amazing BBQ. I love me some Memphis.

Anyway which of these is the worst US city in terms of crime, economy, housing, general livability etc etc etc

Basically which city should be known as America's toilet?
of the ones you named-Detroit. crime ridden and dying, it has seen several leaders sent to prison. Chicago is full of corrupt scumbags of both parties (Dems of course have more since its a Dem hotbed) but Chicago actually has some reasons why people go there. One of my nieces is an actress who chose Chicago over NYC.

I cannot see anyone choosing Detroit

Midtown is nice too, particularly the Cooper and Young area and around Overton Park. When I lived there the really rough areas were up Danny Thomas in North Memphis. South Memphis is pretty rough too. Downtown, Midtown, and East Memphis is mostly nice.
