Gang violence is everywhere, but in red state land it is just in Chicago...

Detroit is a ****hole. It's just sad.

Chicago's bad mainly due to the impoverished "Chiraq" sector of it, Detroit is just one giant mess.

I know the city well. If we are using crime as a barometer of how bad a city is- here is my experience.

In my entire 65 years living here I have been the victim of crime twice. Once when I was in college I went to Tiger Stadium for a game and parked on the street where somebody broke a window in my vehicle and took a jacket from the car. That happened near the downtown area. The other time was also when I was in college working as the night auditor at a hotel when we were robbed at gunpoint. That was in Dearborn.

I have been to every city on the list and have never experienced any crime while in any of them.
I don't think crime should be the only barometer. The one thing that sets Detroit apart from all other cities on the list is the complete economic devastation it's experienced. In my book that's a pretty weighty barometer.

I'm actually surprised that NYC and LA got votes. I just threw them in there because they are the two largest cities but how annyone could say they are overall worse than Detroit, Chicago or Memphis is beyond me.

I have to agree with that. It is the flight from the city - both from business and the middle class that killed the city and made it largely undesirable.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

Anyway which of these is the worst US city in terms of crime, economy, housing, general livability etc etc etc

Basically which city should be known as America's toilet?

None of the above. Camden, New Jersey is the right answer...
