Some conservatives don't seem to understand that years ago there was liberals and conservatives in both parties. Things weren't always like they are now in politics.

That's true. I remember John Lindsay of NY being a liberal Republican, for example.

The one argument that really chaps my ass is when they claim that Republicans voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Democrats voted against it, when it's abundantly clear when you look at the votes by region that northern Democrats AND Republicans voted overwhelmingly for it, and southern Democrats AND Republicans voted overwhelmingly against it. Doesn't stop them from breaking that dishonest-as-all-bloody-hell argument out though.

Gov. Pataki, the governor of NY on 9/11, was about as liberal of a Republican as you're ever going to find. Honestly, so was Giuliani until he started pandering.

I've posted the stats on this MANY times at DP. Always makes extreme conservatives stutter, divert, lie, or some combination.

Yep, and Rockefeller was another example of a liberal Republican.

Goldwater, on the other hand, was a conservative Republican.

Oh, I have too not just here, but on the forums I frequented before I got here. Different forums, same breed of hacks.

Honestly, some of the ones I have encountered in the past would make our right-wing funboys here look like William F. Buckley.

True on both counts. Joe Lieberman was more of a conservative Democrat.

Yep, and Rockefeller was another example if a liberal Republican.

Goldwater, on the other hand, was a conservative Republican.

I was going to say Rockefeller. He was certainly part of the liberal Republican group.

When it comes to those who supported and opposed the civil rights act, it basically boiled down to it be being liberals versus social conservatives.

Goldwater was a fiscal conservative who hid his social moderate side behind political expediency. He recanted the socially conservative positions he held as a politician (when, of course, it didn't matter and he was about to die).

Not even that. It was the racially (somewhat more) tolerant north vs. the pig-ignorant south. The South had (and still has) a real hard-on for the Civil War, and were virulently anti-Republican because that was Lincoln's party, and Lincoln went in and kicked their asses and made them start treating black people like people. IMHO, most of the South's opposition to civil rights was based purely on resentment of the north for beating their asses so bad.

I bet you think George "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" Wallace was a liberal too, amirite?

No, just a democrat. He is of note historically due his length of tenor and assassination attempt, though his opposition to Nixons affirmative action measures was reprehensible.

LOL, believe me I know, I lived in Alabama for five years.

I still think it was their conservatism that drove their hatred. Fear of something as radically different as the civil rights act, IMO, was too much for the far ring wing social conservatives to handle.

No doubt-those divides still exist-see the moderate conservative divide in the GOP and the liberal/moderate divide in the Democrat party. Though I must say, "conservative democrats" are so rare here in california that I've never met one.

Goldwater and Reagan actually had much in common. Both knew how democrats could be.

I lay this right at the feet of the leftist, you guys own this. She essentially covers all your talking points from victimization too xenophobia. This is the fruits of your labor.

Mkay.

Another live one. Awesome.

Explain to me, in your own words, how this woman's belligerent behavior is All "Leftists" Fault. Can't wait.

The Klan is/was a group of far right wing social conservatives. They have certainly never been liberal, despite what conservatives who engage in revisionist history love to claim.

Wrong, and you know it. Part of being on the left is your belief in the ends justify the means, which essentially means lie if need be. Stop spreading disinformation!

What socially liberal positions did the Klan espouse? Nobody else has been able to answer that question, so surely you must be able to.

Your post said precisely nothing except bitter vitriol. Make an actual argument.
