What should we do about Iraq?

What should we do about Iraq?

Stay out. There are no good guys. There is nobody on our side. There is no need for more Americans to die for that place.

It's too late - America, for better or worse, cut their ties with respect to protection of Iraq back in 2010/11. One could argue that the problems in Iraq today are the result of Obama inattention to the Middle East, starting with the Arab Spring, the youth uprisings in Iran, and the total butchering of the situation in Syria. But that bed has been made. Time to let the people of the region fight for their own lifestyles and survival.

Canada isn't a big military player, but I would support my government joining with the US to protect countries like Jordan, as an example, or Turkey, or the Kurds in northern Iraq, because these are examples of people who mind their own business and treat their people with respect and equality. As Muslims, I believe the Kurds are the only "nation" that protect and respect women as equals - something we should hope all Muslims one day aspire too.

Going back into Iraq now, under these circumstances, is a fool's game and sure to end badly.

Here's an idea. Those that think we should go back to Iraq, buy a ticket to Iraq and fight the good fight. I'm sure they would be happy to have your help.

That would be like a US soldier picking up an ARVN rifle during Vietnam - never fired and only dropped once.

P.S. - Thanks for starting the poll, Navy.

The USA never had any real vital interests in Iraq and never should have sent troops there.

It certainly shouldn't send any ground troops there now.

Let them people clean up their own mess.

Pull out. Let them break up into three states. Try to minimize harm to civilians while they work out their own destiny.

We should not get involved in sectarian civil war. Much of the middle east is going to have to deal with this Sunni vs Shia conflict, and it will have to do it for itself. No solution imposed by an outsider will stick or be satisfying to the people there. They won't fight to defend it if they don't build it themselves.

Grab popcorn and kick up our feet. We've done enough damage there it's time to focus on un****ing America.

I voted 'stay out'. But I suspect when Greater Syria brings their hate on us we will be looking back and regretting our decision to let Greater Syria take over the Middle East. I bet that everyone will blame Obama for letting it happen.

Unless America plans on staying there for decades, bribing tribes not to kill each other, and forcing the government to not act thuggish, I would have a hard to support military action. If Iraq wants assistance, I would have no issue with America, Canada, Britain, etc. being brokers of peaceful negotiations.

And you say?

Put pressure on the un, the Arab League and the large nations to take on the responsibility to protect the population.

It is the European neighborhood. Keep Syria and the Fallout their problem and be publicly vocal about this. If countries like Germany won't step up to the plate make sure that everyone knows the dead belong to them.

It's somebody else's turn. We've paid in blood and treasure for a dozen years. We're done. The only stable area in the whole country is the part controlled by the Kurds. I'm willing to provide them any military assistance they require, but no more American soldiers.

You say that as if we are not allies with Europe.

What should we do about Iraq?

Learn from it.

We are allies and not their protectors. They (exclude France and uk) have been free riding long enough and complaining so long about how the USA has done things that their populations think the US is the problem and evil. Let them show us how it works.

And I agree. That is wy I voted to 'stay out'. I think that most Americans will agree enough is enough.

But at some point we wil look back and realize that despite the political disasters of Iraq and Afghanistan, we should have nipped Greater Syria in the bud when we had a chance. These folks taking over Iraq are not going to just go away. Unlike the old Al-Qaeda that we come to love to hate this new one as an actual goal that the people in the region can actually get behind. The borders in the middle east were not drawn be the inhabitants they were drawn by the west. They want their own lines to be drawn by themselves. And now there is a movement that has taken up that goal. But the movement is about as bad as it gets. They wont be content with just the middle east.

Agreed. Germany, as an example, is a rich country with a well educated population and technologically able to defend not only itself but it's neighbors. Not our job any more.

I think it is best just to sit on the sidelines and let this thing play out. If I understand this right, Iran is helping Miliki as are we. Syria, Assad is helping Miliki, the same Assad we are trying to overthrow and since Assad used his air force, he must have had Putin's okay. Some of ME allies are helping finance ISIS, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, some of the ISIS groups are some we gave arms too hoping they would overthrow Assad. AQ has kicked out ISIS out of their organization are are helping the rebel in Syria and at last word are thinking about supporting Miliki. Now I am sure I forgot and left out a bunch more. But this thing in Iraq is so confused ones needs a program just to know the players and it is impossible to tell friend from enemy as enemies are supporting Miliki and friends ISIS.

Just stay out.

You may be right. And when the time comes - if it does - that they attack us directly or prove to be a real danger to our interests, then we smash them with everything we have. No more nation building, no more half-assed military interventions that do nothing in the long run.

We should take Iraq and Iran and make them 1 country and call it Irate.

For those urging that we stay out until Iraq poses a direct threat to our nation: a situation similar to that of Afghanistan in the late 1990s is beginning to emerge in Iraq. I definitely oppose any boots on the ground, and I'd prefer that we not take sides in the sectarian aspect of this conflict, but we cannot have an al-Qaeda-esque movement take control of vast swaths of territory.
