Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Personally, probably FDR, but then again, I support Federalism over state's rights, and am not a supporter of the limited government that others are. In a country as large and varied as ours, government needs to be large and varied, too.

However, I would like to put in a plug for one of our more under rated Presidents: Chester A. Arthur. Gotta respect the man. He helped foster civil service reform... even though it alienated him from his party, and it's past manipulation was something that he himself had used to gain power in the past. Doing this showed quite a bit of integrity and bravery, politically, something that we would see very little of in today's world.
At least you admit you spit on the country and want people controlled, regulated and herded by faceless burecrats. Many of our problems can be traced back to the New Deal and the destruction it has wrought on this nation. FDR should be scorned by all Americans for the harm he caused this country.

Yeah I like how many Republicans say FDR should be scorned, but have no problem enjoying Social Security. When I see a Republican scorn FDR and NOT accept social security, then I will be impressed with that person.

I want it repealed, completely. Consider yourself impressed.

I've heard that from many conservatives that aren't elgible for it yet. Once they are elgible and take it, that talk is long gone.

It's encouraging to see you say it NOW, but will you say it when you can draw it is another story. Good start none the less.

King George III.

It won't exist, just losing my money down a black hole anyway.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Probably GW considering he could easily have been King of the Americas by popular demand but chose to step aside for Constitution. Lincoln was the absolute worst. He broke our Constitution and we have never recovered. He killed the union of states.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Obviously Washington, the man set the Precedent for all Presidents including (without law requiring) the precedent for 2 terms of service, washington was so beloved he probably could have ran for a 3rd term, but thought it would create too much imbalance and create a populist president whom acts as a "Royal Figurehead" (Like FDR).

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Lincoln brought the Union back together and cemented the idea of "indivisible" that we now enshrine in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The idea of a "Union of States" was over with or without Lincoln. Without Lincoln, there would be no United States today. Everybody makes the wrong-headed assumption that there would be 2 countries, when the reality is that it would probably be at least 5. There would be nothing stopping any other states from seceding, and there's no way the Confederacy would have lasted without 2 or 3 states leaving.

I think it's funny that the right now talks about how they are all in favor of states seceding in one breath, then call themselves the "Party of Lincoln" in the next. Like there's no contradiction between those two statements.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Just as you pointed out, there are things that all the presidents on that list did that were controversial. I chose Jackson because he showed we could live debt free. He has been the only one to ever do so. And we are paying the price today for not having more like Jackson in regard to spending. You cite those you could not support because of some form of slavery or internment. But national debt the size we now carry enslaves every taxpaying citizen. We are now at the point we struggle to come up with the money just to make interest payments let alone pay it down. And it will be a trail of tears for generations not yet born if something isn't done quickly.

But Jackson was not the only president to balance the budget.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

This is a toss up for me between Washington and Lincoln. Washington set the tone of the Presidency but Lincoln's management of the war and keeping the Union intact was an act of unparalleled leadership. I usually give it Lincoln but it's really too close to call for me.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

But I'm not talking balanced budgets Social Democrat but rather national debt. Now certainly a balanced budget would keep deficits down that add to the debt. Jackson paid off our national debt in 6 years and was the only president to do such a thing. That's why I picked him because it spoke to a real crisis we face today. I admire Washington, Lincoln, Reagan Jefferson, Madison all for different things too.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Who has been our greatest President?

As President, not other times and aspects of their life.

Washington for sure is number one. Probably Lincoln second and FDR third. In my book these three are the greatest presidents ever. None of the rest comes close.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

how in the hell did Woodrow Wilson get on this list?

I mean, I would ask the same of FDR, but I already know why he is on the list....for the same reasons Walter Duranty won a Pulitzer prize.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

A lot of people didn't like the New Deal.
That was my point. But in typical fashion you got nothing, so you make the thread about another poster instead of the topic.

But not enough to shoot it down, eh?

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

This is all off-topic, but I'm just going to add that we've heard "The South will rise again." many times but there hasn't been a 2nd Civil War yet.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

I think there were a few other things going on in the nation around that time that made "shooting down" impractical.

Yea, yet.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

You noticed that I didn't say that there wouldn't ever be one, eh?

My fathers family is from Nashville, Tennessee.

That's where I learned how to tell the difference between a yankee and a damned yankee: A yankee comes down South for a visit, then goes home, a damned yankee comes South for a visit and never goes home.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

Woodrow Wilson how did he get in there?

a racist

segregated the military, fired all blacks working for the government.

16th 17th and the federal reserve...of 1913.....worst single year in American history.

It's the republicans who call themselves the party of Lincoln. The republicans aren't secessionists. You're conflating on that last.

And to save the union he destroyed it's founding principles. Ran roughshod over the Constitution. We are America now thanks to him, but we no longer have claim to the United States part.

Okay. I don't necessarily agree with this view by any means, but I can respect that.

Re: Who has been our greatest President?

hard to choose a best president, but there are a few that i really respect :

Washington : he was dead on about political parties and foreign entanglements. plus, he set some good precedents, like limiting himself to two terms.

Lincoln : had to oversee one of the biggest national tragedies imaginable : a civil war. that time required a great leader, and he was one. also, whether his motivation was strategic or not, he enacted a measure which officially emancipated the slaves.

Roosevelt : there are some things that i don't like, such as the fact that he served four terms. i don't think any President should serve more than eight years, and probably not more than six. however, if it had to happen, it's better that it happened during WWII. he took the helm at a time when the country had been financially destroyed, and the New Deal created some social safety nets which i definitely support. i know it's popular to say that his demand side approach extended the depression, but i doubt many unemployed Americans back then saw it that way. also, i was thinking about WWII earlier today, and how close we came to something truly awful, like a Nazi empire covering much of Europe, and even a possible invasion of America. those in charge of strategy during WWII were capable and competent, and he was a good wartime commander in chief.
