So you are dismissing the thousands of merchant marines who had already died trying to save Europe from a German madman. The same German madman supported by the 1930's GOP and Prescott Bush. Take your FDR garbage on Pearl Harbor to the proper forum .

Those who choose people like Wilson, Lincoln, and FDR must place a great deal of emphasis on the ends rather than the means or on the intent instead of the result.

I prefer Presidents who didn't start or encourage massive wars and who didn't grossly expand the federal government outside of its intended boundaries. Peace, freedom, and prosperity are virtues.

Grover Cleveland would be my pick.

And to the partisans-neither George W. Bush nor Barack Obama are remotely the worst Presidents in history.

This is true. Mostly. We did have Hoover, Wilson, and many more worse Presidents. However, I think that "remotely" part is a bit of an exaggeration.

He certainly deserves some blame but a lot of it is because he wasn't a miracle worker.
Eisenhower twice during his presidency kept the United States out of Vietnam, he remembered Korea and wasn't about to put a whole bunch of troops into Vietnam. LBJ on the other hand had this fear of becoming known as the president who lost Vietnam. LBJ remembered how the Republicans tarred Truman over China, calling him the president who lost China.

    Some interesting tidbit on Vietnam.

It was Harry S. Truman who first sent U.S. troops into Vietnam, some 65 of them to Saigon which become MAAG INDOCHINA. When Truman left office there was a total of 128 military in Vietnam.

Under Eisenhower in 1954 he upped the military to 342 and MAAG INDOCHINA became MAAG VIETNAM. When IKE left office in January of 1961 he had increased our strength in Vietnam to 890.

JFK in 1962 increased the troop strength to 11,300 and MAAG VIETNAM became MACV. This little change went from a small group to a full fledged major command capable of huge troop increases. When LBJ took over there was 16,300 troops in Vietnam and as they say, the rest is history.

One other thing, IKE warned JFK that Laos was the key to Southeast Asia, not Vietnam. Later JFK complained that IKE had briefed him and talk about Laos and didn't say a thing about Vietnam. JFK failed to heed the old generals advise and set off on his own.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
