Do you agree with the President's recent statements that the US should join the rest of the industrialized world and have provided paid maternity leave? The President said that Congress should work on legislation requiring employers to have paid maternity leave? Do you believe this should be law or not?

No....

Absolutely. Many women are forced to abandon their careers in order to have children or at least take a significant hit to. If family really is such an important value in this country, we shouldn't make it such a hardship for working women to also have families.

Every other western nation enforces paid maternity leave, and they benefit from it tremendously.

Maternity leave - yes. Paid maternity leave - no.

Absolutely they should.

Why America insists on remaining uncivilized in so many ways in the name of "freedom" or something is beyond me.

No woman is forced to have a baby.

If the taxpayers want the pregnant women to have the money they should be the ones to pay.
Of course, leveling it albeit indirectly on consumers is a neat trick; almost wizardry and most people don't notice.

That is if they dont terminate it or hell (it seems) those services are being removed slowly as well...

They can show some personal responsibility and not get pregnant. Make an adult decision on what is important to them. Child, or career?

Other: none should be forced to do so and no employees should have to pay for that coverage if they arent pregnant/getting pregnant.

So you believe we should set up a national system funded by a payroll tax? Rosa DeLauro has in the past introduced legislation that would provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave through a fund in the Social Security Administration, paid for by contributions from employees and employers of 0.2 per cent of wages. Do you support something like that?

So a woman has the right to an abortion?

Why do you want to do that? I don't see why you want to give the money away. I don't see why you want to take it away from consumers and exports. And if you want to give the handout, I don't know why you want someone else than the guys that want to give the handout namely the taxpayer.
But you might be right that it should come out of payroll tax and not total tax.

What I decide to provide my employees in pay and benefits is my business and my decision.

Absolutely they should.

Forcing people to provide other people certain benefits is civilized? Strange.

benefits =

paid time off (vacations)

paid sick leave

ability to save through a 401k program (some companies match)

health insurance (we pay 75% of our employee's cost)

life insurance (every employee gets a policy paid for by company)

those are OUR company benefits....we have 150+ employees

we offer 12 weeks maternity leave (unpaid)

sorry....but paying someone to have a baby goes way beyond the meaning of benefits to me

and it is very sexist.....are you going to pay the father also?

what about an adoption?

Not just no, but HELL NO!

If a couple cannot afford to have a child, why are they doing so?

Agreed. I feel that unpaid maternity leave is fine, and should be offered (similar to the FMLA). However, if our society thinks we should pay people not to work for one or more reasons, then why work at all? Just go to a company, sign some paperwork, and go back home and sit on the sofa. In fact, why have companies at all? Just let the government own everything and pay people what THEY think they're worth. That should work out just great, don't you think?

Personal responsibility is hateful to even think about, and oppressive to ask someone to take responsibility for, much less requiring it. We have to give money to anyone that doesn't have it... except those that earn it.

This type of cultural slide and socialist/quasi-communistic BS just ticks me off.

If it passes, women will have a much harder time getting a job.

I know a guy who owns an fast food joint that says, "between all their lady problems, having to leave for sick kids and getting pregnant, he would just as soon hire an all male staff. I bet that would be the sentiment for most small businesses.

yeah

if it comes down to an equally qualified male vs female

it becomes a very easy choice now

of course, the applicant will never know that
