Is Redskin a slur?

So the state of Oklahoma should change it's name because a bunch handful of butt hurt effeminate men and little girls now consider red man or red skin offensive?

So far, you are the only person saying that.

I guess you loves you some strawman!

If butt hurt effeminate men and little girls are whining about the Washington redskin name then what is to stop these same people from pressuring Oklahoma to change it's name?

I'm curious what percentage of people think Redskin is a slur separate from whether or not the team's name should be changed.

I think a lot of people are so used to the Redskin name they don't even think of it as a slur because they see it simply as a descriptor of Native Americans or of its heritage and never thought of it as an insult.

ONCE AGAIN (and this is getting more and more common), my answer isn't included as an option. My answer:

That is for Native Americans to determine.

My explanation of that is that I don't think it's up to one group to decide for another group what they would consider derogatory. That is elementary. I personally don't consider the term derogatory, but if Native Americans find it so, then so be it. It's really their decision. They've lived a life of being Native American, they have the history and the feelings of Native American ancestors.

My belief is that if some group finds some name or flag or whatever really offensive, especially when backed by a court of law, or because of the past history in our country involving the word or emblem, then the name or flag or emblem should be dropped, out of respect for that group.

You know what they say: Do unto others....etc.

What if there were a team called "Hillbillies" or "Tennessee white pointy caps" or "Georgia Bubbas"? You think there might be a complaint or two?

Ah. Your strawmen are now attacking the Washington Redskins. They move fast.

Didn't know that. Interesting.

Still not really too relevant though, given that that was 150 years ago and I'm pretty sure we ( or at least some of us...) have a bit more enlightened view of the world these days.

There seems to be a hellava lot you don't know. But of course, that doesn't seem to stop you running your mouth.

How is it a Straw Man?

Claiming the people who are objecting to the name consist of effeminate men and little girls.

AFAIK, the people who are objecting are American Indians, and I have no way of gauging their masculinity, and the women (james rage would probably prefer 'squaws'), are not little girls as far as I can see.

That is NOT a Straw Man.

A straw man argument is one that misrepresents a position in order to make it appear weaker than it actually is, refutes this misrepresentation of the position, and then concludes that the real position has been refuted. This, of course, is a fallacy, because the position that has been claimed to be refuted is different to that which has actually been refuted; the real target of the argument is untouched by it.

Whatever whitey.

So was that supposed to be an insult? Because if it was, you failed.

If you're white like I am, we all know that people of the same race can call each other "slurs" all the time and it isn't supposed to be offensive. If you aren't white like me, it doesn't bother me either because I am white, and don't get offended when someone acknowledges it. I'm also blonde, and if you called me "blondie" it would have the exact same effect as "whitey".

This has been explained to this poster many times before. It matters not a whit, stop posting strawmen Bodihisattva. ;)

It has nothing to do with being a bad ass. Actual men to do not go "oh thats racist" because a tiny minority of a minority suddenly decided that a work or sports team name is racist.

I do not think it was ever intended to be a slur or offensive. But then again I am not in their world.

Frankly, my guess it is not just about the name, but all the silly behavior that goes along with it. None of it meant as offensive, but like I said, I have not been subject to INTENTIONAL slurs all my life, so I have no reason to be offended by an unintentional slur.

Especially when they do it in that effeminate whiney voice with their hand waving hysterically...

I don't get why people get so butthurt over names. It's kinda childish if you ask me.

What's even worse are fat old racists that run their low iq mouth from behind a keyboard. They don't have the balls to say these things in public so they vent their hate online with other ******s.

Who is doing that here?

yes it is a slur just like redneck... because of the prejudice ignorant white people who started the name and what it stood for back in the days when Indians were hated..but most people think different about it today...but the Indians still have wounds from the use of the word and what it meant in the past..and no one today seems to care what the indians think about how it hurt them I can tell by the pollindian.jpg

they have just as much right not to have anyone use that name like gays don't like fag or dyke or blacks don't like the n word or jews don't like the words people call them so it is fair to have that name cut from use..the Indians are still upset with the way they were treated they should be proud to have out military helicopters named after them (apache.cherokee, kiowa) but they want those names taken off of our birds

Yes, it's a slur. Just change the name to Washington Warriors and be done with it.

What world are you in... or on?

The world where I am allowed to think the name is not intended as offensive, but some may take it as such.

A world where it is sad that some bigoted assholes use slurs intentionally and do their best to marginalize minorities.

A world where I am allowed to contemplate how those people must feel when the name is taken lightly.

The name causes me no harm.

And realistically....kind of a weird name for a team.

...and a world where the franchise should be legally allowed to use the term?
