Left alone with a sex offender, a teacher is raped - CBS 5 - KPHO

PHOENIX (AP) - A teacher at an Arizona prison was alone in a room full of sex offenders before being stabbed and sexually assaulted by a convicted rapist, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press about an attack that highlighted major security lapses at the facility".

Who dropped the ball here? Are we just so naive to believe that sexually violent criminals can be rehabilitated?

The prison is understaffed. The Warden will take the hit, especially considering he's saying stuff to cover for the financiers:

Nick also said that not having a guard in classrooms or nearby "follows accepted corrections practices nationwide."

There needs to be a least one guard in the classroom at all times. That should be policy.

As to the poll question - some can, some can't.

maybe shock treatment for mental aspect,,,,,or cut it off for physical aspect

Almost never. A man who gets off on sexually overpowering other people against their consent is the living definition of a "predator" and should be treated as such.

I was a Corrections Officer at a juvenile institution in Louisiana in the late 90's and there were two of us officers in the school and we definately didnt stay in the classrooms. We watched the halls, one upstairs and one downstairs between classes, and the rest of the time we were in our office.

Absolutes are almost always wrong so I answered depends. From what I read the recidivism rate among sex offenders runs around 1 in 4 over the course of 25 years though measuring actual recidivism is difficult for a number of reasons.

I get that that is the reality on the ground. However, it should not be.

Oh, I agree. I was just explaining my experience. There are more things that need money then we have money to go around.

I wouldn't want to be left alone in a room full of sex offenders. I can't imagine a woman thinking it was a good idea.

Can't they teach these classes by video or something?

WRT to the poll, I figure that maybe some of them get over it but as far as I'm concerned if you ever were a chomo or a rapist you'll always be that way.

The recidivism rate is too high for sex offenders. I read once (don't remember where, so I can't cite the article) that said that recidivism rate for (child) sex offenders was like 91% or something astronomically high.

There's no way to rehabilitate with someone that high. That's the reason for the Registered Sex Offenders registry. You don't see thieves or murderers that have to sign up when they move to a new location. Sex offenders have to be watched closely to make sure that they don't pick up where they left off before prison.

I would guess that the potential for rehab is zero to very rare. That being said, some of the sex offender rolls need to be re-examined, because an 18 year old who had sex with his 16 year-old girlfriend can be on a sex offender list, and judged by the same standards as a middle-aged man who molests children. Texas seems to have a particularly backwards stance on that.

Exactly. Look at us, right here in this thread. I'm ****ing disgusted. All of these same people, along with the bulk of Americans, cry havoc about the high cost of incarceration, and bemoan the state of our corrections institution system, but then when costs are cut, and the inevitable happens, wah, Someone should have prevented this, wah, someone should have DONE something.

I do think sex offenders can be rehabilitated. But it always depends on the person/crime ect. When a person goes to jail for any offense and are released they should not continue to be treated like a criminal. They have paid their debt to society. I know that doesn't apply to the asshole in this case, he was in prison, but I am speaking to the poll question of can a person be rehabilitated.l And to that I say yes. Some people can be. Not all, but some certainly can.

that's gonna be about a 3 million dollar cost to the state for that. The prisoner should get LWOP since the best solution is not possible (give the teacher a shotgun and a complete pardon signed by the governor)

sex offenders tend to be much harder to rehab than drug or economically driven offenders

I'm not necessarily interested in the poll, but one question keeps nagging me.

Is this, by chance, a privately-run for-profit prison?

I love this:

Carl ToersBijns, a former deputy warden at the prison, said the assault highlights chronic understaffing and lax security policies that put staff members at risk.

It doesn't highlight that at all. It highlights terribly inappropriate use of resources. Leaving a woman alone with a violent sex offender (which is where she found herself at class end) is reckless and shows a complete disregard for an employee's safety.

If they were understaffed, maybe they shouldn't have the classes. Priorities. Just sayin'.

What in the HELL? I filled in at a detention center for violent youth for a while and wouldn't have agreed to being alone for a second, and this was when I was young and trained in various martial arts.

I don't see how this teacher even felt comfortable being alone!!!

I ran groups for adolescent sex offenders and adult pre-release felons. I never once feared being raped or phsycially assaulted, except every day I was there. You are locked into a room with 20-30 young men or grown men and your only defense is a panic button that sends off an alarm that alerts guards that SOMETHING is wrong in one of 8 areas. Hope and pray you were in the first area, because by the time they go to the 8th...un uh.

The reality is I never had a problem...not even close to one. I had a great relationship with my groups. I remember my first meeting with the adult pre-release groups I got there a little early and due to my clothes and length of my hair and beard a lot of them thought I was just another inmate when we started the group. They DID give me the courtesy of explaining to me how I should respond should something bad happen (which again...never happened). The worst thing that happened to one of the female therapists is that she made the mistake of standing behind one of the sex offenders during a class and reached over his shoulder to point at his work and he turned his head and chomped down on her forearm....down to the bone.

Not that it still wasnt the inmates fault...but you NEVER put yourself in an unseen one-on-one with anyone and you NEVER do them a 'favor' like that.

You would be shocked to see how easily some people allow themselves to forget who they are dealing with. The number one report-able offense we had and I assume it is universal is the number of teachers, therapists, and guards that get busted in dual relationships with those people.

More likely she will get nothing because she violated the policies to start with. But you are quite correct about sex offenders. Most wont even admit they committed a crime.
