I like soccer well enough but I find FIFA soccer almost impossible to watch. Every four years I sit down to watch the World Cup but almost instantly turn it off because of all the flopping. Whereas in most sports the games are decided by some combination of size, strength, speed, and strategy, FIFA revolves around who can fall to the ground harder and wail loudest. This has led to plenty of hilarious videos on YouTube but it also highlights a fundamental disadvantage Americans have at soccer tournaments. We rarely do it at all and when we do we do it poorly. Should this be something the United States actually addresses?

The game would be helped immensely by instant replay.

I would suggest a system that allowed coaches a certain number of challenges to calls, which would then be reviewed. Not only would I have the calls erased when a player is caught flopping, but would award the penality to the other team, instead.

I would imagine this would reduce the theatrics greatly if the refs were honorable.

I don't like the idea of instant replay. One of soccer's strengths is it's non stop flow. I would like to see a review system were all instances of a player going down is reviewed by a panel. If a player is judged to have flopped he will get a warning or 2. If he continues to flop afterward he gets a game suspension.

Damn, that dyslexia is getting to me again. I thought you said "non flop show" and was ready to give you a vigorous rebuttal.

Do it anyways.

I don't know if there really is a good answer for this.

I definitely agree that the non-stop flow being one of the sport's strengths. It's not unheard of for boxing to change the outcome of a bout after it's finished. Maybe FIFA could create a body that reviews each game, disallows goals scored directly because of a missed call, and heavily penalize a player caught flopping. That would be a good start in getting rid of flopping without disrupting the flow of the game. Soccer games routinely end in ties anyway. It's not perfect but I think it would be better.

It won't effect that game, but if a player knows his play will be reviewed and can result in a suspension he will be less likely to flop.

Not with the World Cup being a tournament.

The incentive isn't that there's no on-field (or post-game) penalty. The incentive is flopping is just so effective. A player would be foolish not to flop his way to a World Cup victory when there's no guarantee that he'll make the team four years from now or that his team will even qualify.

There is flopping/cheating in every sport. Basketball sees its fair share of diving, drawing the foul etc. NFL receivers will often play to the ref in order to get that flag thrown ( especially WR's), Baseball obviously has had a major drug problem as has cycling etc. Cheating is human nature end of story.

p.s Nice troll thread.

Not one tie so far this World cup...

Troll thread?

I think there's a pretty big difference between a player trying to sell a penalty in other sports and what we see in FIFA soccer. Wailing on the ground like you were sodomized with a broadsword is just kind of a big part of FIFA soccer. We didn't even get a full game into this tournament before a huge flop directly impacted the outcome of the game.

obviously a troll thread given your little snide comments and the fact one of your poll options is " soocer is terrible".
There is no difference between diving in the box for a penalty and a WR looking for the hold/ appealing to the refs which draws the flag.

Also worth pointing out that not everyone gets away with diving and if caught you receive a yellow card.

That's true, but it's pretty rare is it not?

I wouldn't say it was rare. However it doesnt get the same amount of press as a dive in the box does and they get away with it.

I like soccer well enough. Flopping is obviously a very big issue recognized by virtually everyone who has ever seen a match with you as the sole exception. As I said in the other thread, no one is really saying anything especially negative. You just go ape **** when it comes to anyone saying anything remotely negative about your favorite sport. It's just kind of childish really.

Lol ape ****? Over react much? I just find it mildly annoying listening to people like yourself who don't know what their talking about. Diving isn't killing the game and its rare for players to get away with it. Normally they get booked for their antics or ignored by the ref, now and again a player will successfully fool the ref and win a penalty etc.Not really that common though.

Absolutely not. It's cheating and is currently one of the most frustrating things about watching the sport. I'd rather have the US team lose than win by such pathetic methods.

Why on earth would you suggest this if you're so sick of it? Instead, i recommend that FIFA use replay and ban for life anyone who flops in the penalty box, since the hosts brazil have now twice done it at end of game to try and ruin their own event. I would also award penalty kick to the other team. That will put a stop to this behavior quick.

The last dive was punished in itself by a foul not being given. He should have had a yellow card as well, but the fact is that as he broke into the box with the ball, he was already set in his mind on what he intended. He had a fair chance of scoring himself, or laying the ball off to his teammate in front of goal, but instead he wasted the opportunity by trying to cheat. It didn't work.
