Many action movies glorify violence and teach gruesome methods of killing people. Some horror movies celebrate fictional serial killers?

Re: Should violent movies be regulated?

No, that's censorship.

What should be regulated is children & adolescents viewing such material. Why? Compare a horror movie from the 70's like The Exorcist to a horror movie from this era like Sinister. The cinematography, visual & special & sound effects, etc are orders of magnitude beyond what previous eras had to offer, yet those movies from yesteryear scared the bejesus out of children then. An apt comparison is marijuana from the 70's to the medicinal stuff today.

Very true they do. I don't think we need any governmental regulation here though. The MPAA's system generally works pretty well in my opinion.

Re: Should violent movies be regulated?

Stop the needless gun violence on TV, its in nearly every program.

tell me what you mean by "regulate" and "adult movies"

movies are already regulated by the rating system

Movies are already regulated.

There are things such as the MPAA Rating System (http://www.mpaa.org/film-ratings/).

And as a parent I have access to parental controls both through my cable subscriber and can limit by channels, by rating, and by time of day what be viewed on can my TV.

Same goes with my Netflix account, I control the parental controls and can limit what is viewed either on the whole account or for specific profiles.

So are you talking about regulating what comes into your home or what your kids view or are you talking using big government to regulate what other peopel view?

Can't answer your poll because you left out the option for "Parent should regulate what their children view."

Turn off the TV, limit viewing time of your children, or block channels that you disagree with.

Regulate your TV, don't try to regulate mine.

I voted no . . . no more than they already are by being rated "R". We've got enough to worry about without trying to legislate that crap. Worstest ever: Hostel and its sequels and, of course, "Let's play a game." (What was the name of those movies?) Oh, yes. Googled and edited: Saw and its sequels. Gruesome. Loved 'em.

Edit: Loved 'em, yet capture and carry live spiders and other bugsters outside to turn them loose. ;)

Yes - we have ratings with very detailed outlines of what goes into each movie's rating breakdown - sex, violence, cursing, etc is covered.
I've actually looked to these detailed breakdowns to decide whether or not I want to take the kids to the movies.

Then why "Stop the needless gun violence on TV..." if you don't watch it? Are you saying government shouldn't let other adults watch it?

We have a rating system and fairly wide access to reviews of films. The idea that showing (yet not writing about?) "bad stuff" causes others to emulate that "bad stuff" defies logic. Should the news be forced to skip reporting about "bad stuff" as well?

Good job, as parent's we did also.

In addition my kids didn't have TV's or internet capable computers in their rooms until they were seniors in high school and I spent the time and learned how to set parental controls on our TV's (parents bedroom and family room).

Both recently graduated from college, so it wasn't that long ago.

Re: Should violent movies be regulated?

Short of snuff films, CP, and films that directly incite actual violence, the government has zero business regulating movie content.

Re: Should violent movies be regulated?

Cinema is already regulated. It's a big joke though. Movie ratings are extremely reliant on who you know in Hollywood and who you don't and I have this information straight from the horse. Take a movie like say 300, it got a rating of R by the movie industry. Why? Simple. Violence, sexuality, coarse language - the works. However, for the most part it's borderline cartoonish violence. None of it is meant to be taken seriously.

Now take a movie like say.... The Avengers:

Features realistic violence choreographed by some of the brightest minds in Hon Kong - Check.
Sexuality - Check.
Coarse language - In more than one language.

Rating: PG13.

Now this isn't by any means anything new. However, it is indicative of an industry's failure to regulate itself. Even movie buffs have taken notice:

PG-13 Movies Now Actually More Violent Than R Movies, Study Says - /Film

The study, which was conducted by Ohio State University and UPenn’s Annenberg Public Policy Center, will be published in the December issue of Pediatrics magazine. The researchers analyzed over 900 films which were all among top 30 grossers of each year from 1950 through 2012. They found that the amount of gun violence in movies has more than doubled in frequency during that time.

Hey MPAA, Why Are PG-13 Movies More Violent Than R-Rated Ones? – Flavorwire

The study’s conclusions about the Motion Picture Association of America’s “standards” for the PG-13 rating shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who’s paid much attention to the organization (or who has seen Kirby Dick’s excellent documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated). Anything more than the quickest flash of nudity will get you an R rating, and you only get one free “F-word” (and that can only be in the non-sexual sense, i.e., “**** you” and not “I’d love to **** you”) before you’re in R territory. But when it comes to gun violence, hey, have at it; as long as the blood isn’t, like, literally spraying, you can kill as many people as you want in a PG-13. You just can’t show them ****ing, or talking about ****ing.

Violent PG-13 movies: Which ones are the bloodiest? - Los Angeles Times

Those blood-spattered works included "The Dark Knight," "Terminator Salvation," "Inception," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," "The Avengers," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Taken 2."

The researchers easily could have included several other recent movies in their excessive violence tally -- movies that many reviewers have singled out for relentless bloodshed.

As the report noted, the original "Terminator" and "Die Hard" films in the 1980s were rated R, but their most recent sequels were rated PG-13, even though the updates actually contained more violent acts than their predecessors.

Violent PG-13 movies: Which ones are the bloodiest?*-*Los Angeles Times

Ratings aren't just telling of violence / gun violence, however.

Cursing, lewd jokes, nudity, sex, drug abuse - these things also constitute R ratings. The director has to decide what they want to sacrifice in order to obtain an R rating - ergo - if someone sacrifices violence it means that hte other elements, they felt, were more significant.

Perhaps they should just be restricted like adult movies. Both types of movies are popular in USA. Many places in the World consider US culture to be sick and want to avoid American influence.

It's a lot simpler than that. How does a Tarantino movie get NC17 but the Matrix 3 gets R? Look, the MPAA is made up of people who work in Hollywood. Executives for Disney, Warner, FOX, etc. There isn't a standardized system and there never has been. Hell, the gaming industry has done a better job at a rating system than Hollywood. Remember, this is the same industry that thought The Brady Bunch movie was PG-13 and so was Jurassic Park where people are literally ripped to shreds on various occasions.

Re: Should violent movies be regulated?

We should ban books, too. And plays. And music. And just telling each other stories or jokes. There's violence and sex in those, too. Clearly we can't let people have access to them. Titus Andronicus, the Man from Nantucket, the bible, and Gimmie Shelter, they all have to go, right?

If you can't handle violence and you can't handle human interaction like sex you should just off yourself or at the very least shut the hell up.

Re: Should violent movies be regulated?

No, media should never be censored. I also think the American MPAA (Ontario seems to copy most ratings) rating system is far too strict when rating movies. I like Quebec's system far better unless you really want to go over that line there is no way to get a rating above PG-16. Full frontal nudity and sex, PG-16, **** in every sentence, PG-16. For example Wolf on Wall Street is PG-16 as well as Blue is the Warmest Colour. Game of Thrones is PG-13 and some of you may know what is in that.

As a Libertarian I am for political freedom, but obscene and violent material should be regulated.

Why should the government have to regulate this? Why can't the responsibility fall on the parents to ensure that children not see seeing obscene movies and tv shows and the responsibility fall on adults to decide what they should see for themselves?

That is an infringement on our freedoms. If you really believe that, you are not a Libertarian.
