"Under God" in pledge of allegiance?

Should the words "Under God" be in the pledge of allegiance?

I saw this poll elsewhere and decided to post it on here. I'm sorry ahead of time if this poll has been done already.

Currently they are, and I don't consider it worth the effort to get it changed. Gotta pick your battles kinda thing. It ain't really hurting any one.

I don't say it, but I don't have a problem hearing it.

If you don't like it, don't say it. The Pledge is socialist nonsense anyway.

Put any words that you want in there, this is a (Somewhat.) free country.

If you can't say what you want to say that makes it a little less free, doesn't it?

Who forced anyone to say the pledge?

Why are we talking about BS like this when a lot of important things are going on?

If anyone knows, I'd like to know.

How is whether the pledge is forced or not relevant to it having the words "under God" or not???

Since the words were not originally in the pledge until America got its collective panties in a twist over communism, I'd say the words should NOT be in there.

That being said, I don't care one way or the other at this point in my life.

I think the pledge is nonsense in how it's used and "suggestively forced" onto our kids in school.

I get visions of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" sometimes when I think about the pledge and how it was required when I was growing up.

I think it amounts to exactly what the people who changed it intended it to be: indoctrination of children that proper Americans believe in god.

To see that this is exactly what it is, just imagine how ape**** people would go if we proposed changing it to an atheist version: ... One nation, under no god, indivisible...

We would be virulently accused of indoctrination, and the death threats would be numerous.

It should be removed.

I think we should change the words "under God" to "and **** atheists".

Didn't like that I proved my point, huh?

Most people don't give a **** about your point. That was just to tweak you, and it worked. Carry on, write your Congressman or woman. Frankly, I love that under God offends you.

How does me pointing out that it was you was "tweaked" make you believe that it was I who got "tweaked"?

Oh. And my point still stands.

I voted no, I am really starting to despise Christians and all their hypocrisy and sensitivity about everything. So I am starting to believe that this crap they are adamant about should be stamped out.

You want to pledge to **** atheists? Well you're not my type but I'm sure we could find an nice atheist guy who'd help you fulfill your commitment.

Should it be there? No. Do I care if it is? Not enough to make a big deal about it. I haven't personally had to recite the pledge in years. And if I did, I simply wouldn't say it. I think it would be better if it weren't in there. It just isn't important enough (at all) for me to really do anything about. I don't think it would be important enough for me to even take 30 seconds to sign a petition over honestly.

Perhaps things have changed but when I was in elementary school during the 1970s we faced discipline if we did not stand and recite the pledge each morning. I was the odd exception in my class. My mother visited the school and told them not to allow we to recite the pledge due religious reasons.

I personally do not have a problem with the God part in particular but I do not like the entire thing for that very reason. I feel that it is indoctrination of our children to pledge themselves to our country.

I think we should change it to: "Whatever it is, wherever it is, you didn't built it, you didn't earn it, and you don't deserve it. So take what we give you and sit down and shut up."

Dude, you need to lighten up. That was for militant atheist consumption in a thread that I find ridiculous and petty.

I need to lighten up? I was making a joke. There's a LOL smilie and everything.

So, do you want us to find you that hook-up or not? :2razz:

I don't think you proved your point though, assuming that your main point was that you:

...think it amounts to exactly what the people who changed it intended it to be: indoctrination of children that proper Americans believe in god.

I, and my family, are irreligious/agnostic.

My kid says the Pledge in school every single day.

He has yet to come home and insist we find religion, or engage me in a discussion of religion along any lines.

I think adults, primarily liberals/atheists find meaning in the Pledge that children just don't.

For children it's more a form of nationalistic indoctrination/acculturation: "I love my country".

And I don't think there's anything wrong with that when you're dealing with school children.

As kids get older, head off to college and decide they want to smoke dope, bathe in patchouli, worship "Che" Guevara, and curse American exceptionalism and soft empire, I say, more power to them.

But I think it's important that they love the country first, and then want to change it into something that more closely aligns with the philosophical ideal of "America" than that they're taught from the age of five onward that American is really only two steps removed from the Third Reich.

I care more about its requirements in school than I do two words within it.
