You're building a strawman - this has nothing to do with free-trade agreements.

But to address those free-trade agreements, while they've been frankly disastrous for America's economy, there's been a global upside to those free-trade agreements - I wrote about that global upside here several years ago - but I wrongly referred to them "Reaganomics" since it was Clinton and not Reagan who did what the conservatives wanted and supported those free-trade agreements.

I didn't say it was our responsibility, did I? All I'm saying is that if we want to turn the flood of illegal immigration from Mexico down to a trickle - or even reverse the effect as happened very temporarily in the wake of the Great Recession - we have to build up their economy. That's the ONLY way.

Just because there's one and only one way to fix a problem doesn't automatically make that our responsibility. It all boils down to just how much you want to solve that problem.

I guess you could sorta compare it to going to the dentist. It's not really your 'responsibility' to go to the dentist, and it costs a heck of a lot of money...but if you want to fix the pain you're getting from that abscessed tooth, going to the dentist is the only way to really fix the problem.

A toilet at a truckstop in Missouri.

    Have I got it right?
That's an old toilet, probably an antique.

If I owned that toilet I would put it on the antique auction block.

You have to admit, the stall is clean and no used soiled toilet paper on the floor.

Did you get it right ? How often have socialist ever gotten it right ?

I agree with that. So it has little to do with terrorist sneaking into the U.S. through the Mexican border.

It's just as illegal for a Canadian to come into the United States as it is for a Mexican to come into the United States. Why would you build a wall on the US/Mexico border and leave 3,000 miles unprotected at the North of the country? Why? It doesn't add up.

    or does it?

How many times have you heard someone say, "If they are going to come to our country they need to at least learn our language."? and When you heard it, was it the same person that also says, "I am not racist but......"?

I understand what you are saying, but if THEY can't get their stuff together to improve their economy, why should we believe anything the USA did would improve their economy? It is like saying that if we all chip in and and help folks acquire better housing, open doors for them through affirmative action, increase education funding, etc. etc. etc., we can help a whole group of people improve their situation. And in fact a few individuals were helped, but the larger net effect was to create a whole new crime ridden underclass with entrenched poverty and perpetual unemployment.

And to think that the only answer to illegal immigration is to improve Mexico's economy is like saying the way to stop burglaries and robberies is to get more stuff and money to burglars and robbers, etc.

What's the ratio of illegal entry from N'ern vs S'ern border?
What's wrong with being able to communicate with the citizenry of a country you are about to join? What does language have to do with racism?
So we are racist because we don't offer 3 for French (Canandian)? Why are we discrimination against non Hispanics just because they don't come across the border in droves?
These accusations of racism against Hispanics are as dull as an old pair of socks, and mostly brought forth by those who don't have anything else to offer and don't care about law and sovereignty.
Are all other countries who take their borders and sovereignty serious racists as well? Against whom?
Go on, illegally cross the border into Mexico from either direction and see what happens.

Actually, today - before midnight - I've got to write a ten-page research paper on how to improve the economy of the Mississippi Delta, which is as bad as much of Mexico's - and significantly worse than some areas in Mexico. According to the research papers I'll be referencing, using tax breaks and similar incentives does draw business to depressed areas - see "Texas" (though they're shooting themselves in the feet by slashing education funding).

While American tax breaks and tax incentives can't - or should not - apply to a foreign nation (though the GOP pushed through and refused to let Obama repeal tax breaks corporations got for outsourcing our factories overseas), we can give preferential trade deals...but such deals should be conditional on certain economic improvements that would help to build the Mexican economy. It's not something that would work overnight - but we can't look at this as a short game - we have to look at what will provide long-lasting benefits over decades, over generations. Unfortunately, we Americans have a tendency to want immediate gratification. If we're going to fix illegal immigration, we've got to get past that tendency.

And to think that the only answer to illegal immigration is to improve Mexico's economy is like saying the way to stop burglaries and robberies is to get more stuff and money to burglars and robbers, etc.
Wrong. I've already shown how in the aftermath of the Great Recession, we had zero net illegal immigration for at least two years, maybe more. Why did we have zero net illegal immigration? Because many were leaving since they felt that economic success was as likely at home as it was here in America. Why did they feel that way? Because our job market - and not theirs - suddenly dried up.

And you can see this all over the world - illegal immigration always comes from poor (or war-torn) nations to richer nations. Improve the economy of the poor nations...and all of a sudden illegal immigration goes away.

Sometimes the 'cure' is a whole lot worse and makes the patient worse off than the illness did.
So...you think that doing what's necessary to fix Mexico's economy (which means we can profitably export to them, too) in order to stop illegal immigration is worse than our problem with illegal immigration?
