Would you support civilian application of drones?

Obviously Amazon has been in the news for this. How about say what NASA is doing for hurricane research. Or some of the nature photography that can be done.

    Edit: Non surveillance uses...

I am not opposed to any technology that can advance the quality of life. But if it is used solely for the purpose of invading my personal life, then I have an issue.

Drones aren't bad, but the operators can be.

Every tool's capacity to do good is matched by it's capacity to do harm. It's all in the use. I do not endorse them for law enforcement use, federal or state. There would have to be significant legislation limiting their use.

I guess should have been more clear, non surveillance uses...

Glad to see people are open to them.

In my neighborhood, we have an occasional black helicopter flying around, no markings whatsoever except for a number on the tail, should I be afraid?

Depends... Do you believe in UFOs?

Honestly the number you are seeing on the tail is probably it's registration number. Aircraft have to be registered with the FAA. The number is called a N number by pilots. It is also the radio id they use when talking to air traffic control.

Of course and it isn't a hypothetical it's already well underway. The FAA is also on the verge of ending its waiting period and finalizing it's commercial drone regulations. The age of commercial and civilian drone technology is here.

Who would ever object? Certainly not the gutless public.

Short of revolution (which won't happen) drones will be deployed in whatever nefarious capacity. Stay used to it.

So I can relax, it's not a police helicopter looking for banditos.

They should be banned for use in the US. I could care less what crock of **** excuse they use to try to use them. The fact is they will be used by our government to spy on people and they will be used by private entities to spy on people. So this should be nipped in the butt before it even gets a chance to take off.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"
