Obviously Amazon has been in the news for this. How about say what NASA is doing for hurricane research. Or some of the nature photography that can be done.

Edit: Non surveillance uses...

I am not opposed to any technology that can advance the quality of life. But if it is used solely for the purpose of invading my personal life, then I have an issue.

Drones aren't bad, but the operators can be.

Every tool's capacity to do good is matched by it's capacity to do harm. It's all in the use. I do not endorse them for law enforcement use, federal or state. There would have to be significant legislation limiting their use.

I guess should have been more clear, non surveillance uses...

Glad to see people are open to them.

In my neighborhood, we have an occasional black helicopter flying around, no markings whatsoever except for a number on the tail, should I be afraid?

Depends... Do you believe in UFOs? ;)

Honestly the number you are seeing on the tail is probably it's registration number. Aircraft have to be registered with the FAA. The number is called a N number by pilots. It is also the radio id they use when talking to air traffic control.

Of course and it isn't a hypothetical it's already well underway. The FAA is also on the verge of ending its waiting period and finalizing it's commercial drone regulations. The age of commercial and civilian drone technology is here.

Who would ever object? Certainly not the gutless public.

Short of revolution (which won't happen) drones will be deployed in whatever nefarious capacity. Stay used to it.

So I can relax, it's not a police helicopter looking for banditos.

They should be banned for use in the US. I could care less what crock of **** excuse they use to try to use them. The fact is they will be used by our government to spy on people and they will be used by private entities to spy on people. So this should be nipped in the butt before it even gets a chance to take off.

Absolutely ... That is Obama watching you pick up the dog poop in your back yard...
You are being watched!

If you use a cell phone the government came spy.

Wonder if they are watching the actual pooping experience... that would be creepy.

Not wanting remote controlled or autonomous robots flying around is akin to government using your phone to spy on your? I can leave my phone at home, wrap it in foil or take the battery out.Good luck doing that with drone.

Darn those guys, that's supposed to be private.

I heard that red power light on our DVRs are really cameras. Next thing you know, they'l be snooping in our bathrooms.

Does it have a roundel with a black heart symbol on a blood red background?

If so it is one of the cutting edge drone choppers that the CIA and NSA are developing in a joint project. It is armed with both laser and microwave incineration devices. Prolly nothing you need to worry about if your nose is clean. Of course, If some clown presses a wrong button by mistake, or if some intel SNAFU fingers your peaceful abode as a terrorist safe house then you have had it, but you will be vaporized too fast to feel anything.

In answer to the poll, yes I do support limited civilian application of drones.
I anticipate that 50 years from now FedEx, UPS and the US Postal Service
will using be them for most if not all local delivery.

And as far as the police go I have no problem with surveillance and other
features by which drones might help apprehend criminals of all types. I do
not give a fvck if I myself happen to appear coincidentally in any of the video,
and I think having the video makes it much less likely that me or anyone
else will the the victim of false accusation.

The aircraft and pilot licensing procedures which have been in place for close
to a century provide models for limiting the use of drones to those who know
how to operate them and those who need to know how to operate them.
Considerable consumer savings should be available if companies like Amazon
could deliver via drone.

On the other hand, I am not at all sure that there is any social benefit to giving
your local detective agency a drone license to make it easier to see whose
husbands are screwing around with whose wives at which cheap motel. No doubt
suits, countersuits and appeals will get all such squalid legal details ironed out by
about mid-century.

I'm no luddite, but American citizens have yet to master the ability of driving an automobile.

Sure. Seems like a good idea. Won't happen in my life time though. I am still butthurt that I don't have a flying car like on the Jetsons.
