I agree that the US has had an exceptional history and has done exceptional things but I guess my point would be so have many other countries. You look at the infulence the Italians, French, Spanish, Chinese etc have had on the world and I think its fair to say at one point in history a lot of countries have been exceptional.

I think what leo said is correct, and therefore it's difficult to have a debate if we can't agree on what we are debating.

If you take out of the debate the idea of exceptionalism meaning superiority and exemption from agreed ways of behaving, one country with others, then I, and I think Leo, would agree that American is exceptional. I'd also claim that the UK, Spain, Turkey, Cambodia and Thailand (i.e. all the countries which I know best and have lived in) are exceptional too, for a wide variety of different reasons. But I don't think that 'American Exceptionalism' as a concept actually does limit the definition to merely outstanding or notable or any other term that doesn't presuppose superiority.

Sure you are not. You sound very angry. But either way, I feel sorry for you that you think that the US is just another run of the mill society and nation.

Thank you very much for the kind words - I really appreciate that...and frankly, a compliment on my poem coming from a true Englishman means much more to me than one from my fellow Americans. I actually began writing it before I heard of Obama, so I certainly didn't have him in mind when I wrote it. I'd say it took about two years (and a lot of patience by my wife).

I would not use such subtly denigrating terms as 'run of the mill' in respect of the USA, or any other developed and successful society, but it is self-evident that the USA is simply a nation, like any other, inasmuch as it is unique, but has admirable and less admirable characteristics. It is militarily powerful, and financially successful, as befits the pre-eminent military/industrial complex of the day, but there are aspects of its sociology which are questionable (depending upon one's ideological viewpoint,) and it has that in common with most developed societies. I do not think you should pity anyone who is prepared to look at his own society objectively - most people would consider that an admirable trait. It is not for nothing that patriotism (I think nationalism would be a preferable term,) is considered the last refuge of the scoundrel.

Just remember, we only got exceptional after he took office.
