Lame. Really lame. If your going to bait, flame or troll you could at least be creative about it. :coffeepap

It was a succinct illustration of the thread subject and your ignoring the subject in attempt to apologize for child abuse.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

You have at best a hung jury here. Most likely an acquittal. Because just looking at the comments here I doubt highly a jury would convict. Because it seems most don't agree with this being cruel punishment.

I think it would depend on a lot of things. Plus there would be more information to come out here. And it is possible that he could choose to simply make a deal.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

There are less excessive/cruel punishments that would more likely work and not put him in danger of potential health issues such as heat exhaustion/stroke, muscle strains/sprains, or many other things that are potentials depending on more information about the actual conditions.

You dont know that and you dont know what discipline has been used previously. You also dont know what physical shape the 16 yr old is in. I gave an example in my 2nd post.

Everyone is different. Just like there are different learning styles, there are different methods that work with different personalities.

Aren't very creative or literate are you? Come on at least try to be creative. Otherwise you look like a lazy slothful troll. If your gona bait, put some real bait out. Really, the lack of effort lack of effort is just..... lame.

I hope the man doesn't make a deal and stands his ground.

Here's another, more detailed article:

UPDATE: Father's discipline
"I got to work and saw him there and I asked if he was alright," Burnete said. "I know now he was 16, but he is a little guy, I thought he must be about 9 or 10 at the most. He was sweating, dirty and was obviously tired. He asked if I could give him a ride so I checked with my boss and he said it was OK. He picked up this massive brick and asked if he could put in in the truck.

snip

Burnette said that a few hours later with temperatures near 90, he saw the boy again along Kings Highway. That's when he said he knew something wasn't right. After quizzing the boy, he found out it was punishment and that he had to do the walk with the brick in two hours or less or he would have to do it all over again.

There is dash cam footage of the boy and his father at 2:00 a.m on Sunday. The police were concerned because the boy is very small, carrying a heavy rock, walking more than three miles, sometimes in the heat of the day and on often very busy roads, putting him at potential risk in several ways. He made the trip once on Friday, twice on Saturday and once on Sunday.

This is the best you can do to defend your apologizing for child abuse?

Why are you so angry with my assessment of your position? If there is no validity to my position, it shouldn't bother you.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

It was actually called Air Base Ground Defense school but I figured that most folks wouldn't know what ABGD stood for.

So you was a rock humper in the AF???? I can believe a lot of things about Zoomies but not humping rocks in rucks as any part of their training, but do tell....

Your not very good at baiting. Another lame attempt. Well keep at it Forest, maybe you will get it right eventually. :coffeepap

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

You dont know that and you dont know what discipline has been used previously. You also dont know what physical shape the 16 yr old is in. I gave an example in my 2nd post.

Everyone is different. Just like there are different learning styles, there are different methods that work with different personalities.

I do know that this boy (according to the news report) was much smaller than the example you gave. 4 foot 2 inches tall is the size of an 8 or 9 year old. If the kid weighed over 100 pounds at that height, he would be considered fat/obese.

Everyone does have different personalities, but that doesn't change how excessive this punishment is given the information we have. The father didn't say the kid was being punished for being mouthy or abusive or getting into trouble at school/in the neighborhood or other things that could lead a person to believe the kid was troublemaker. No, the reason given was for watching too many videos (there is no reason this could not have been dealt with by taking away all access to electronics in the house), not doing homework (generally involves parents actually getting involved, I still don't understand how a parent could get a child to do that much manual labor but not stand there over the kid's shoulder while he did his homework, which likely wasn't even attempted), and not doing chores (so give more chores or heighten the expectations). Even if the things I gave were tried (one of them, unless the kid is really good at hacking, can be easily done), this punishment would still be excessive, in my opinion. And it is pointless.

And it could cause physical issues. Do you think it isn't warm/hot in Georgia in May? I'm seeing about 75-87 F for this past weekend (which is when it sounds like this happened). If the exercise is something the kid is not accustomed to, the level could easily cause issue with muscle strains/sprains, especially given the amount of weight the teen was carrying for the average amount of time (it would take about an hour, maybe a little more to walk three miles carrying weight).

Obviously we need more information here, but what we have is enough for me to say right now that I find it excessive and even cruel. (I find it cruel for any child/teen to be punished with pointless activities. It seems to be done more for some morbid satisfaction of the punisher or just plain laziness rather than actually being used to help the kid, teach the kid.

It doesn't backfire IF you are consistent. The reason most punishments fail is lack of consistency. Your right it is a test of wills. A parent needs to start early and often to pass that test.

I disagree. If you are consistent, it just backfires that much harder. Different kids need different styles of parenting. If the child is a defiant type, understanding and comfort tends to work best (velvet glove in iron fist approach)

Your not very good at baiting. Another lame attempt. Well keep at it Forest, maybe you will get it right eventually. :coffeepap

First, accusing people of B/F/T is, in and of itself, flaming.

Second, my assessment of your position is legit. If you disagree with my position, feel free to counter it with something other than BS.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

4'2" and 140-145 pounds. Doesn't sound like a small kid to me. Short, yes, but not small.

If anything this is an overweight, lazy, spoiled kid. And his father resorted to the one treatment that he knew, military. How is this any different than if he was to send his kid to a military boarding school?

You'd be surprised. I am going off the information we have, and from it, I see it as excessive. I might change my mind if we find out the kid was either larger than reported (they are reporting him to be only 4' 2" tall, that is small for a 16 year old, very), or actually a star athlete of some kind. For an average kid though, especially one that size, this is excessive punishment.

And I don't agree with any pointless tasks. In themselves, they are cruel to me because they don't actually serve a real purpose and they aren't likely to fix the major problems that require punishment. They don't really teach anything and they are much more likely to make a child rebel. If you give a teen/child an actual meaningful task as punishment, the punishment is more likely to sink in.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

I hope the man doesn't make a deal and stands his ground.

He has already been ordered to attend some sort of counseling. I highly doubt he won't face some sort of punishment for this incident.

Definitely overweight. But that to me says that there is an issue as well.

At military boarding school, the kid would be guaranteed to be doing punishments in "safe" conditions, not the middle of the night (2 am he was caught on camera) or the middle of a warm day with no water (we get canteens and are in fact forced to drink in the military if it is a punishment exercising).

I think things have changed a bit over the years but back then there were a few of us who went through quite a bit of infantry training. That particular course was a prerequisite for those of us who were going to be shipped to eastern Europe to work with Ground Launch Cruise Missile teams. Our basic function was to establish and maintain perimeters for remote temporary bases but we also did a lot of other stuff including handling security for a "bug out" command post for NORAD.

Football, basketball can cause physical issues. Parents look for those things. It was a 23 lb block for 3 miles. It's easy to walk that distance in an hr or less.

YOu find it excessive and cruel. If you knew what lots of farm and ranch kids did on a daily basis....as chores and as fun....you might have a different perspective.

And that's right, we absolutely dont know the whole picture and until I know more I wouldnt say excessive, cruel. or unwarranted. I believe the father's punishment (if carried out) would be excessive without alot more justification.

Well the question was- did you hump rucks filled with rocks. I WAS a grunt, not just 'went through quite a bit of infantry training' and NEVER EVER humped rocks. Never carried a rock in my arms, like the kid was doing, anyplace.

For most REMFs 'infantry training' was playing bang bang with blanks while running around throwing the occasional fake grenade. Throw in some bunker duty and they thought themselves VERY salty...

One of my last assignments in the RA was as OPFOR during ATEPs for rear echelon units- real pud knocker duty but fun to watch Pogues try and play grunt...

Except he was alone, during the middle of the day, twice, with no water on him. This is verified by the delivery driver. So no, it does not appear that the father "knew what he was doing". And he wouldn't have had him out at 2 am if he knew what he was doing either, since no father is going to be able to stop a car being driven by a drunk driver or even just someone who can't see them (which at 2 am, is the time for drunk drivers, verified by the very fact that the police had someone pulled over at that time of the morning to get them on camera).

The average male walks at a normal (no weight being carried) speed of 3.5 mph. This is someone who is going to be about average height (around 5'10" for guys) and in decent physical condition. Plus, that does not include the extra activities that went on at home.

The delivery driver followed him the whole time? Or did he just observe part of the hike?

He picked him up once and gave him a ride to his house (or at least close). The second time was later. He says he had no water, nothing to drink on him. How would he carry it carrying a 23lb rock with him?

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

Sounds like the son was being lazy, yet again, and couldn't even complete the task he was given for not doing the tasks he was given. Clearly there is a pattern here with this kid.
