So I guess you would make a child that doesn't use an "indoor voice" go around screaming their head off as punishment.

Not a bad idea. Telling them that they HAVE to scream as loud as they can until YOU say "Stop" would teach them to pay close attention to thier personal volume.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

I noticed you left out this part:

Sorry, but yes, that is child abuse.

Absolutely agree. It boggles my mind how such cruelty is frequently disguised as "discipline." Some guys should never have been fathers in the first place. This guy is definitely one of them, and I hope he is convicted of the charges and given a long prison sentence.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

They were able to get him to do this, so obviously they can do more chores. Glad the police stepped in.

Me too.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

Sounds like the son was being lazy, yet again, and couldn't even complete the task he was given for not doing the tasks he was given. Clearly there is a pattern here with this kid.

Ya, and that woman was just asking to be raped with the way she was dressed.

(It's an analogy of kind not degree, before anyone accuses me of equating this with rape)

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

This isn't remotely the same thing.

If your kid doesn't do their homework, and you punish them for it. (The punishment being subjective; talking to them, grounding, whatever)

Then again, they don't do their homework. Do you give them the same punishment? Worse punishment?

Then again, they don't do their homework, then what?

How is that comparable to blaming a woman for what she was wearing when she was raped?

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

There are many punishments that can be done that don't involve physical punishments like this. Grounding, extra chores, etc.

Luckily the police diagree with YOU.

It's abusive and more than that it's LAZY. All a kid learns from this kind of thing us to fear, and probably eventually loathe, his/her father. It's one thing to say make them do yard work that involves raking leaves etc. , otherwise known as normal chores. It's completely another to treat them like a pack animal. I can't help but think the father's got some issues to work out here. Nice to see he's in counseling. I hope he gets something out of it.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

Sounds like this kid had it easy.

I grew up on a farm, I did more work before 6am than what this kid got as punishment. Then there was cutting firewood. We always got 5 cords cut, split, and stacked each year. The occasional ditch to be dug etc. and as if all that wasnt enough I worked for neighbors doing all that work that I hated at home so I would have money to party with, buy drums, guitars, amps, truck etc.

The comparison was with respect to your victim-blaming, not with respect to the act.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

There was no victim in this case.

So if he had sent his son to military school and the kid had to move rock there, he isn't a victim? But since it was his father, he is?

Yes there was.

If a military school made the kid move a rock several miles for hours on end with no water in ninety degree heat, that would be criminal.

Agreed, but I tend to doubt that this guy will get anything out of counseling unless he really wants to change. My guess; he seriously believes his son is the one with the problem, not him.

Re: Father faces child cruelty charges for teen's punishment..

I don't find this punishment rises to the level of cruelty... over the top, maybe.. but not cruelty or abuse.
instead of forced marches ( not that 3 miles in under 2 hours is tough by any stretch of the imagination).. I chose push ups, crunches, mountain climbers, and bends and thrusts as negative reinforcements

throwing his father in jail and preventing ( chilling effect) him from raising he child with discipline is far more harmful to this kid than having him walk 3 miles with a rock.

at least the guy is instilling some discipline in his child... altogether too many parents can't be bothered to do even that, which results in their child gaining entrance into the throngs of young adults who are complete and utter assholes.

Almost certainly, but if there is any hope for this person counseling is the way to find it. It would have been pointless to throw him in jail.
