We fired the first shot. Japan would have declared war a few days after Dec 7. I would suggest folks read the timeline to the attack, we depth charged a sub of theirs before the air strike, of course it doesn't matter since their planes were already airborne, does make for some fun thinking exercises though.

While The US wouldnt have been at war, a cold war would have continued in which the US would supply UK and China with needed money and materiel.

The Japanese didn't know their sub was sank by the US when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The reason it was sank is because its location was considered an act of war. It had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor being attacked. The Japs had planned the attack for months.

Why would the US not enter the war after thousands of mostly defenseless sailors and other military and civilian personnel were cowardly surprise attacked and killed?

Oh I agree, the job of the sub was about to cause more destruction during and after the air attacks. Had the sub still been sunk and no airstrike, things may have played out differently.

Most Americans did not support entering the European conflict.

But it was Germany FDR was itching to get us to go to war with. Japan did him a favor in bombing Pearl, then Hitler did him an ever bigger favor when he declared war on us a few days after Pearl. One must remember there was a very strong isolationist cause in the U.S. back then. A lot of people who thought let Europeans fight Europeans and keep us out of it. One also has to remember also the Pacific Theater war was secondary to the European war. Europe came first, the Pacific whenever the war was won in Europe.

It is hard to say what would have happen if no Pearl Harbor. Personally I think FDR would have kept searching for a valid reason to get us involved in Europe and sooner or later he would have found it. As for the USSR, Stalin had already moved most of his factories east of the urals in case Moscow did fall. They were far from dead.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
