Should Donald Sterling be forgiven?

No one is saying he is Satan. So spare us the apologetic strawman.

His lifetime of attempts to marginalize a minority (the heart of racism) came to light in this attempt to do so. His racism is institutionalized, it took place in his real estate business, his team and his personal life.

And on top of that, he insulted every working person by calling paychecks handouts. He spewed that crap out of a modern plantation fantasy.

No one wants to work for him.
And yet, they do. And are. Could be more than a touch of histrionics going on here. The outrage and drama fairy is definitely puttin in a little bit of overtime.

Such a clear case of long term racism and disrespect for employees comes to light, of someone it was not expected from (despite some evidence against him being rather clear), besmirching the NBA as an organization, you post about it... complaining it's drama.

Ok

"Such" a clear case...and yet, up until two weeks ago he was being recognized by the NAACP for his NUMEROUS contributions to minority communities and you nor anyone else gave a **** about him.

Please...put Tina the drama llama back in the back acre when you are done feeding her.

This is not the first time someone in a position that would presume the exclusion of disgusting behavior turns out to be a bad guy.

It is the most egregious example of such regarding a major sports ownership in the modern era.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of the dramatic posts in this thread.

He also excluded blacks from housing and treated employees in a bigoted manner, that's institutionalized racism. Those things were given the benefit of the doubt until he made it clear that he is a bigot in his personal life, then the other things became undeniable.

It's like a teacher turning out to abuse children or a cop being a drug dealer. It's unexpected for the person's position. That adds to the shock.

I think for some people, the denial is a matter of shock and, for others, it's a matter of wishing it would somehow turn out he's not racist (and is forgiven for our misunderstanding) and they were right all along. :screwy

Yeah. Too bad we don't hang people at the meetinghouse at sundown anymore. Some of these people would be volunteering to knot the noose if they thought Sterling's head would end up in it.

Telling your girlfriend who you want her to bring to games isn't illegal. Child abuse and drug dealing is.

No one is suggesting Sterling be killed.

Sterling being racist (which every owner must have known already) is NOTHING like a child abusing teacher or a drug dealing cop.

The first is repugnant...but legal.

The second one is hideous and illegal.

The last one is wrong and illegal.

The point is: Sterling is in a position wherein one would not expect the behavior engaged in. That he had won awards and such does not prove innocence, it adds to the shock of a racist being an NBA owner.

The point is you're trying to equate illegal activities with a man's words that were, quite frankly, none of your business or mine or anyone else's. If that isn't scary, I don't know what the hell is.

That's not the point, that's your diversion.

A bunch of old, rich, white guys...and you expect all of them to not be racist?

Not me...I assume most of them are (to varying extents).

The only thing that shocked me as how stupid Sterling was to blurt it out (even in private) like that.
Always assume everything you say is being taped.

That's not the point, that's your diversion.

The point is you have to be insane to equate child abuse to the private ramblings of a man in the privacy of his home.

Child abuse is disgusting. And it's a damn sick example to use here.

It's all getting out of hand. What's the guys name, Don JOnes? He also got fined and suspended for saying two words; "omg and horrible". I'm in an IR marriage and I could care less what he thinks about minorities in his head. Penalties unless you conform to groupthink is getting ridiculous. Let's just silence everyone. Let's (try) and shame everyone into thinking exactly the way we do. When will it bother you? When someone speaks on politics, and gets fined? When someone gives their opinion about someone's body shape, or guns? I like knowing what a person is made of. Give me a person real and raw,(even if I disagree)over a timid, fake, two faced person anyday!

Like any other group, there will be good and bad, smart and dumb. His position is what covered for him so many years and caused us to be shocked. The event demonstrates that racism occurs at the highest levels of our private organizations, and it can do so over years using position as a cover. The implications are cringe worthy and the NBA would be well advised to wash their hands of it as quickly as possible.

I couldn't think of an example that wouldn't offend someone. I haven't even started to get crap from the left about implying the war on drugs is legitimate.

I apologize if I offended anyone. I've explained the point I intended to make. We can discuss that point, or you can continue to berate me for not coming up with perfect examples to illustrate the point I have made clear.

Financially, yes.

Ethically...no.

I still don't believe someone should be forced to sell a business because they hold private views that are racist or sexist or against people with big feet or people who hate broccoli or anything else of a non-violent nature.

I believe strongly in freedom of speech.

You offended me. And anyone with children should be offended by you comparing the abuse of a child to what Sterling did.

And Sterling did not commit a crime. If you want to be dramatic about what Sterling did, you may want to pick a non-criminal act for comparison.

Forget that you equate child abuse to some words...holy ****.

That's not freedom of speech. That's freedom from the repercussions of speech. I don't believe in that.
