There. See. He said he was sorry.

The NBA got what it deserves. Sterling has been a loose canon for decades. I'm surprised it took this long for it to blow.

Oh did anyone see his comments about Magic Johnson, OMFG.

Maybe he'd be better off not giving any more interviews, he keeps stepping in it.

LOL...

I'm sure you'd prefer this...

A house cat and an eagle. I bet the eagle is laughing about the collar.

It reminds me of when my house cat approached a male peacock and thought she was tough.

One peck on the head sent her in the house for 2 days.

I want to point out....Donald Sterlings comments are a tip of the iceberg. The guy has a history of doing and saying things that were racist. This was was just proof that he couldn't deny and would protect the NBA in court.

Sorry for misstating your position. That's the way it read to me. Apologies.

His action of telling his girlfriend to not bring black people to Clipper games and his statements about handouts marginalize black people in general? We're back to my counter which is that there are alternative - non racist - interpretations of those statements and I see no reason to prefer the racist interpretation over the non-racist ones.

Further his statements didn't actually marginalize anyone. They were made in private and even if his girlfriend acted upon them, her not bringing Magic Johnson to any more Clipper games hardly marginalizes an entire race. Same with the handout statements. Whether he calls it a paycheck or a handout, paying people millions of dollars hardly marginalizes the players or their entire race, especially considering that there are whites and asians on the team as well as blacks. Or were his comments specifically about the black players on the team, in which I'd agree with you that he's attempting to marginalize.

From what I understand, he didn't ban Magic Johnson from the games, he just didn't want her to bring him. How is that racist?

Come now. Examine what he actually SAID..and who he said it to. He didnt say we dont want black people to come to our games, nor did he say we want to make it harder for black people to come to our games, and there is no indication he was committing racist acts with the Clippers. The NAACP was about to give him a lifetime achievement award cuz...sunovagun...dood be given out CHECKS yo.

He said he didnt want the girl he was having an affair with (a latina that turned out to be half black herself) to be seen with black guys at the Clippers games. That makes him a sleeze, and as a person someone that expressed racist ideation and maybe even an actual racist. And really...thats about it. Douchebag...maybe. Satan...nah.

I believe he was given the NAACP award because he was bringing underprivileged black kids to the games regularly.

How does that fit in with his racism?

No one is saying he is Satan. So spare us the apologetic strawman.

His lifetime of attempts to marginalize a minority (the heart of racism) came to light in this attempt to do so. His racism is institutionalized, it took place in his real estate business, his team and his personal life.

And on top of that, he insulted every working person by calling paychecks handouts. He spewed that crap out of a modern plantation fantasy.

No one wants to work for him.

You are saying this man has spent his 80 years trying to marginalize blacks? Do you have any proof other that an out of court settlement and a private conversation?

From what I understand, he didn't ban Magic Johnson from the games, he just didn't want her to bring him. How is that racist?

Because that's not what he said.

From the Los Angeles Times:

“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people,” the man in the recording says, later adding: “I’m just saying, in your … Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people.”

I think there has been enough Donald Sterling bashing.

With respect to Sterling's limited apology (accepting responsibility for his words, not the underlying attitude responsible for them), along with his blame-shifting, below are excerpts from an article that analyzes why his limited apology didn't really help him.

'People should be watching this for a long time and understand what not to do in a television interview,'' says Steve Adubato, who teaches crisis communications at New York University.

Sterling made the classic mistake of dragging other people into a conversation that should have only been about him. An apology should be straightforward and sincere, not about what others may have done.

''The apology has to be absolutely genuine,'' says Amiso George, who teaches strategic communication at Texas Christian University Texas. ''It has to be from the heart. Not something that the person has to do.''

According to Politico, Donald Sterling has moved from criticizing Magic Johnson to criticizing the President’s remarks concerning Sterling’s racist comments. Excerpts:

“I think that was such bad judgment on his part to make a flippant comment from Malaysia,” a voice that is purportedly Sterling’s says in another series of audio recordings published Wednesday by the Daily Mail.

“He’s a good guy, and I like him, I just think everybody wants to get into the act, is that it?” Sterling added.

Report: Donald Sterling calls Barack Obama

Sterling’s latest comments provide possible insight into why he has not made a complete (dealing with words and attitudes) and unconditional apology to date, much less shown any meaningful interest in acknowledging and addressing the underlying attitudes that almost certainly were at the root of his leaked comments. Instead, his suggesting that the criticism he received was a mere “act” implies that he does not comprehend the gravity of his remarks, much less the problem of racism and its consequences.

It stretches the imagination to accept his alibi that he was “baited” into making racist comments. There is no evidence of any kind that he was instructed to make racial references. He could easily have told his girlfriend to stay away from other men without injecting race into the matter. In general, such comments are a direct product of one’s attitudes.

Finally, racism is not a trivial matter. Criticizing racism or racist comments is not a mere “act.”
