A Transexual Has One Eurovision: Progress?

Tonight was the Eurovision international song contest. All of the nations of Europe (plus Israel for some reason?) get together and screech terribly into the microphone while the UK makes fun of them relentlessly, then loses.

Sometimes it's musical gold, more often it's comedic gold, but it's got a viewership in the hundreds of millions.

Tonight, the winner was a transexual named Conchita Wurst from Austria (I might point out, at this point, that wurst means sausage, which is just a little bit funny considering the circumstances).

What's less funny and more powerful is that it was indeed an open transexual, a woman with a beard, who won the contest, and garnered more votes than anyone else. Eurovision is determined by popular voting, which means that tens of millions to hundreds of millions voted for Conchita Wurst's act.

To many in Europe, this is seen as a victory for progress and tolerance, that so many people would vote for and laud an openly transexual person.

Do you think this is an example of progress, and the times changing? Do you support Conchita's transexualism, and are you proud that an openly transexual person can be internationally lauded?

Or do you think it's wrong, and immoral?

Or maybe you think it's all a gimmick anyway?

    Where do you stand?

    Here's a link to Austria's entry:

EDIT: To my shame, I misspelt the title. It should be won, not one.

Out of curiosity, is this thread about music or gender identity?

I mean, the question seems to be about a song but I don't see a link to one. Is the idea that someone with the gender of a Rubik's cube shouldn't be able to sing? Are the two connected? I mean, I know they used to chop the nuts off kids so they'd continue to be able to hit those high notes so maybe it does but if so it's news to me.

Ah, I'm sorry, I guess I didn't explain what Eurovision is properly.

Eurovision is a giant song contest between all the nations of Europe, and at the end, everybody watching votes for their favourite act.

So, what that means is, by merit of Conchita Wurst getting overwhelmingly the most votes, she had literally tens to hundreds of millions of people voting for her.

To me, this says that they didn't find her morally or physically repulsive, despite her transexualism. Many in Europe are heralding this as a victory for tolerance and progress.

What I'm asking is -- do you think so?

She's not transsexual, She's a transvestite. The Conchita persona is a drag act, performed by a complete man. Who also sang the best song on the night, while getting up the noses of the Russians, homophobes in general, and the intolerant everywhere.

I once saw a transgendered leprechaun. Most people think I am crazy, but they do exist.

While Conchita Wurst's act is a drag act, she herself is also transexual -- or, at least, that's how she's been introduced tonight on Eurovision and by the BBC.

Am I sufficiently enlightened if I don't give a rat's ares either way?
If you claim sexual harassment to be wrong, yet you defend anyone on your side for any reason,
then you are a hypocrite and everything you say on the matter is just babble.
