I wouldn't have a problem with it...I certainly think that SOME high-ranking government official needs to do it. We definitely need more lines of communication with Syria.

However, the President sets our foreign policy for the most part. I'm not sure what Pelosi could accomplish, unless Bush signed off on the meeting.

Is she planning on meeting with Assad? This is the first I'm hearing of this.

I am for women all the way but seeing how all the Muslim countrys hate and degrade women I think that no woman should have anything to do with these countrys.

Perhaps I'm being suspicious, but I'm curious as to the purpose of this question/thread.

Yes she's going and the White House is condemning her actions, as well they should she has no bussiness going over there, it undermines our foreign policy.

Pelosi is making a trip to Syria and undermining U.S. foreign policy she has no bussiness what so ever going over there, I think she thinks she's president.

U.S. foreign policy undermines U.S. foreign policy. We're friends with those who support our enemies and enemies with the enemies of our enemies. It's bananas I tell you bananas.

She does not represent the U.S. in any official manner therefore she should not dot it.......

I always thought our elected officials did represent the U.S. in some official manner. How many U.S. senators and congressmen meet with foreign officials every year? She's not setting policy NP. She's meeting someone to discuss some issues. You obviously don't understand the difference.

Until the details of her meeting come out, its not possible to judge her conduct. Foreign policy is the Presidents domain and she should not do anything to usurp that. However, there are plenty of innocent reasons for visiting another countries leader, so until we know what happened, judgment is premature.

If the White House doesn't support it, she won't be able to accomplish much. But as long as both Pelosi and Assad are aware that she can't offer anything or negotiate on behalf of the US government, I don't really have a problem with it. Other Americans have visited other world leaders before without the White House's blessing...Jesse Jackson is the prime example of this.

If nothing else, maybe more contact between the US and Syria will help improve relations, even if no actual negotiation takes place.

I don't care. Who Nancy Pelosi meets with are her own affairs not mine.

WTF we need to look united when confronting threats to the U.S., Pelosi going over to Syria sends mixed messages and undermines U.S. foreign policy.

Do you really think that Syria doesn't have a foreign ministry? Do you really think that Assad believes America is a monolithic entity? Is it really a big secret that in a country where politicians regularly go on CNN and run their mouths about almost anything they're asked about, that people in our government might have differing opinions on foreign policy?

he shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint ambassadors,”

“The Iraq Study Group recommended in December that Washington reach out to Damascus for help in shutting down the insurgency in Iraq. Since then, a number of lawmakers, including Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), have visited the Syrian capital for talks.”

Since they have to advise the president on such matters of diplomacy I can understand the Senators going. Nelson is mine and I am sorry, because I actually had to vote for him, the alternative was too far out there on some issues of concern to me. Senators could claim it is like part of their oversight; Senators might need to talk to wacky leaders to see what ambassador to put there.

I guess ambassador Pelosi wants a promotion.

On a lighter note, do you prefer 1 or 2:

She is setting a precedent that democrats might regret in the future.

You just don't get it, Mrs. Speaker has no bussiness what so ever going to Syria end of story, what they say on CNN is not the same as making official visits to foreign countries this is a clear undermining of U.S. foreign policy.

I have not read much about this as I do not care who she meats with.

Now if she is claiming to be making a official visits on behalf of the united States then I do care and have a big problem as I don't believe she has the authority to do that.

To anyone

Question: Is there evidence that she is making this out to be a official visit?

Question: Does she have the authority to make a official visit?

I don't see how it can be taken any other way when the Speaker of the House decides to travel to Syria and meet with their leaders when the Executive branch has made it abundantly clear that they don't want her to go.

I don't think they can stop her but it's just a pretty ****ed up thing for her to do.

Is it an "official" visit? Are Pelosi or Assad under the illusion that she can negotiate on behalf of the US government?

*I* could go to Syria and meet with Assad, if he would see me. So why shouldn't Pelosi be able to do what she wants?

Pelosi Plans Trip to Syria Next Week - washingtonpost.com

Democrats were quick to point out that Perino did not speak out about a Syria trip planned for about the same time by a Republican-led delegation.

Pretty ****ed up thing to do indeed.

We must look united on this issue. I'll wait for you to condemn the republican delegation that plans to do what Pelosi did. I wont hold my breath though. ;)

I'll condemn both. It's one thing for a statesman like Jimmy Carter to meet with whoever he wants in the world. It's another thing entirely for the woman who is second in line for the presidency to be meeting with foreign leaders when it is against the express policy of the US. You want diplomacy? Fine. But do it through the appropriate channels, not as an end-around to the official policy. All meetings like this do emphasize the split in the US government and weaken our negotiating power when it comes time to actually sit down and cut a deal.

The Republicans shouldn't be going either, but one group is a group of Republicans, the other is the Speaker of the House and second in line for the presidency. Which one is more damaging to the US position?

Since George W. Bush is in fact a real life George Kastanza it is not a stretch to believe that everything Bush does is wrong and that the OPPOSITE is the right course of action from anything that Bush suggests.

Therefore if Bush is saying it's the wrong thing to do (Pelosi in Syria) and his every instinct is saying it's wrong it can only mean that Pelosi meeting with Assad is in truth the RIGHT and CORRECT thing to do!:2wave:

No one, not even "Peanut head" Carter should be meeting with any government with out the approval of the sitting administration be it Republican or Democrat.......I personally believe Pelosi went off the deep end long ago...
