If I hadn't said "part of the reason".that would assume that every black kid who got AA came from a more challenging environment than every white kid they displaced. that would be a lie.
Wait, so this "magnet" school was some kind of...honor roll school? Of a sort? I have zero experience with public school systems.especially if say black kids who went to the Hyde Park School or the Kilgore school (two of the top rated elementary schools in the Cincinnati Public School District that sent lots of kids to the magnet school-Walnut hills) were getting breaks over peers from the same neighborhood and elementary schools.
In that case I I would tend to agree with you that lowering standards just to let more black kids in doesn't make nearly as much sense.
Better to have applied effort to the "lesser" schools in order to bring more if those students through.
