    Ha!
I don't know I guess im just light hearted. Ive just never taken them seriously and they never should be. They are shock jocks, comedians, entertainment pundits and nothign more.

Now dont get me wrong i know people that take them seriously. But those people make me laugh even harder sometimes because i know they are eating it up and going to be regurgitating that stuff word for word when i talk to them and it makes it that much more funny.

I think those people who call in to disagree with the host are POEs or plants by the show so that fans of the show can hear their favorite hosts trashing the opposition. I can't imagine someone who regularly listens to talk show host whose opinion differs than theirs calling in just to get trashed on air.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I can imagine though someone calling in only to discover that their debate skills don't work very well out loud and in public. Oratory is a huge skill and is why those talk show hosts are paid as well as they are.

Not all of them have debate skills. Some are just able to attract listeners by pushing the right buttons, and do great when delivering what is essentially a long-winded monologue, but shrink when having to actually debate someone. These people usually are quick to cut off a caller as soon as the caller becomes too inconvenient. I have seen this happen over and over with some hosts. Almost never with other hosts. How often a host is apt to cut a caller off is a great indicator how competent a debater they are.

Well, I didn't say that they were all Cicero clones, or that they were even particularly good debaters, only that presenting yourself verbally is an exclusive skill set that most people are not prepared to acknowledge until they suddenly find themselves in front of an audience for the first time. That's why so many people call in to the radio station prepared to set the talk show host straight because it sounded so good in their heads, only to open their mouths and unleash confused rambling, stuttering and an infinite armory of "ums" and "uhs." Of course these poor saps are going to find themselves at the mercy of idiots whose only advantage is that they can communicate their points halfway competently on a microphone.

There is a special skill to it, yes. My point is that the skills vary from host to host. I couldn't do any of it, I don't think. I don't feel that my mind is quick enough to come up with answers and thoughts and retorts off-the-cuff like they do. When I write here I have the luxury of time to think about what I'm going to say before I type it in.

And I agree that too many callers to any show come off as inarticulate, at best. Occasionally I have even changed stations for awhile because a caller was insufferable.

I already know my public speaking skills are less than stellar (and I've had a LOT of opportunities to find out). Fortunately I didn't have to learn the way this guy did.
