If the US would not grant a visa to someone in general, it is under no obligation to grant that person a visa as a matter of UN business.

I suppose the US could recognize the ambassador, but no country should grant illegal visas for the UN.

So, by "recognize" do you mean "grant a visa to"?

Re: Should the USA Recognize Iran's UN Ambassador Nomination?

Other than UN premises residing on American soil (which needn't remain the case, btw), is there any moral justification for America's position that only those they approve of be eligible for participation? Whatever this scoundrel's history, is there any member nation that can boast a clear conscience? If indeed this man is denied entry, it's tantamount to admission of both the UN's irrelevance (as though any further proof were necessary) and America's criminal partiality. Either way, proceedings would then become a proven sham. Not that it would make any difference, of course. Our detached and aloof whoremasters would roll on regardless and we'll all take it in the ass as per usual. Same old.

Re: Should the USA Recognize Iran's UN Ambassador Nomination?

every country at times has problems with someones ambassador but unless he commits a crime on US soil for which the US could demand from Teheran to keep this guy at home, I am not sure if the US has the means to stop this guy from being an ambassador.

Now is it wise from Teheran to choose this moron? NO, it is not. Even if he had not actual involvement the leadership in Iran must know that this is going to be a touchy subject for the US, even 35 years after the events took place. But just being a member of that youth group and translating when asked is not the same as being one of the people who actually took hostage or guarded the workers from the US embassy. What these people did back then was despicable, kidnapping and holding innocent people hostage for no reason whatsoever. It is sad that this ever happened and sadly the Iranians did not prosecute the guilty perpetrators.

De Facto stoppage power. They have the power to keep him out of the USA. No Visa, no admittance to the UN building.
