The tax rates don't reflect what rich people actually pay. The rich can afford attorneys and accountants and structure their finances to avoid or delay taxes. Also, many of the rich are wealthy, but don't have a high income. If and when rich people start leaving the country to avoid taxes then I would think it may be time to lower the tax rate.

    Why? If you don't mind.
Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. If you want a different result, don't blame someone else, or expect others to make a change, you should stop complaining and make a different choice. Remember, the circumstances of your birth don't determine the outcome of your life.

That goes back to my question above: Who defines "rich?"

I pay the top amount, and can't afford attorney's or tax accountants or anything else you said. Ever heard of AMT?

The 2013 tax tables are below:
Maybe but it's an easy problem to solve. If you pay too much in taxes one year, you can make the proper arrangement to pay less the following year by making less money. Most people prefer having more money and fail to use this strategy. Taxes is just one of those things like the weather. People love to talk about the weather but nobody ever does anything about it.

Hint: Nobody uses this strategy to avoid taxes.

Yes, I do know that. However if you have an adjusted gross income of $1 billion, your effective rate is only about 22%. And there is no state that would bring the total anywhere near 50%.

For the same reason some religions have tithes. The community as a whole dictates that a percentage is more fair than a set number. It is unfair that the poor pay the same amount as the rich when it is more detrimental to them to pay the fee.

So "great" countries have to charge for the right to live within them? That kind of thinking makes me want to pick up and move to a country that can prove its greatness through methods other than theft and extortion.

It's a cute little slippery slope. Maybe the state just decides that you don't need money. It'll take everything you have and determine, on its own, what you need and what you don't.

    Just do as you're told.

You may not understand what a flat tax is, and I wasn't talking about that. But since you mentioned it, if a person making $1M pays 20% ($200,000.00) and a person making $40k pays 20% ($8,000.00), then the guy making $1M pays $192,000.00 more than the other guy. That is fair. Both pay the same rate.

No one is saying that everyone should pay the same amount, just the same percentage.
