A multimillionaire in California is subject to the top tax bracket of 39.6% for the vast majority of his money, and California's state taxes peak at 12-13%. Assuming a minor state credit for federal liability, you're still paying damn near 50%.That's not a misconception. You're just plain wrong.

    I'd prefer to see either:

    1. A single flat tax that covered everything; federal, state, local, gas, cell phone, tolls, whatever. Automatically deduced from our paychecks; no annual filling, loopholes, deductions, credits, whatever. Let the government figure out the math and split it up, not us. If the government wants to offer a credit for something, let that be separate from taxes and work like a rebate. If they want to add more taxation to cigarettes and beer with so-called sin taxes, roll that into the costs of the product like gas.

    or

    2. A single flat retail sales tax that covered everything. No payroll deductions, no annual filling, no loopholes, no deductions, no credits, no whatever. I'd be okay with a higher sales tax rate for luxury items and services and waiving the tax all together for residential homes that are less than 200% of the cost for median homes in their state. If the median home in your state is $150,000, no sales tax on homes $299,999.99 and under. And no property taxes ever.
Well yeah, if you add up taxes from all sources it's downright offensive. It's just something we don't think about.

Everyone should pay the same amount of taxes. Not as a percentage of income. But as an exact dollar amount. Since we all benefit equally from the government services.
That is the only fair way of doing things.

What is the non-taxable income enjoyed by the really wealthy?

Nonsense. Obviously a company using big trucks benefits more from roads than a company selling bicycles or kites. A richer man has more need for a boat ramp or marina slip. Not everyone qualifies for "safety net" assistance (like Medicaid). People's use of any particular gov't service will vary greatly, as will their total use.

A more fair way of doing things would be to divide the federal budget by 535 and send the bill for that amount payable by that congress critter - allowing taxation in that state/district to reflect their cost of representation.

    That could start a revolution
The reality is our Government spends TOO much.
The Cost of goods sold for our Federal Government is about $12,000 per person per year.
Family of 4, $48,000 a year, yep they are spending too much.

Should the government spend less than they take in through taxes?

Should the government spend more than they take in through taxes?

I guess what I am getting at. Would you be ok if your taxes were $0 even if the government spent like crazy through borrowing rather than taxation?

Of course not, we the people are still liable for their poor spending habits.
Ideally The Government should spend exactly what they take in in taxes.
If they are taking in too much the rate is wrong, it they are not taking in enough,
they ether need to raise taxes, or spend less.
