Can anything be done about trading with China?

Over the years several alarming events have transpired in the U.S. as a result of the trade relationship with China.

Granted, U.S. import quality standards could be orders of magnitude better, but case-after-case shows quite clearly that China's manufacturing industry has next to nil production quality standards. And this lack of standards has sickened and killed Americans.

So, what can be done about it?

Put in more effort checking at the boarder and heavy penalties on the vendors and producers of faulty goods.

This goes well beyond safety concerns. My Wife's company is recalling some of their manufacturing facilities in China because they just won't listen to how something is suppose to be made.

Bring manufacturing (and the jobs) back to America!

Make America a place where manufactures want to be instead of a place the desire to run away from.

My Chinese built iPhone's and iPad's seem fine.

If the quality is so terrible, people won't buy it.

All this sounds like anti-Chinese rhetoric to me.

Has no one seen the GM news lately? 13 deaths that could have probably been prevented. And the government owned it while some of this was going on.

Leave the government out of it unless the products in America prove to be dangerous.

Its almost ironic, the race to the bottom, the competing for cheaper and cheaper labor, isn't it?

Throw in the cost of shipping and it makes you wonder how anyone makes a profit using Chinese labor.

Re: Can anything be done about trading with China?

I'm wondering if our government has made some kind of trade deal with China that precludes Americans from filing product liability suits, with the availability of punitive damage awards, against China by American citizens.

China's routine has always been to start out with acceptable products, then after a period of time, when the market is established, the quality begins to decline more and more.

That decline in quality is why when you break bolts or tools from Home Depot, but made in China, they always seem to have a partial cold joint at the break. It's very obvious. Eventually there is zero quality-control, which means higher profit for China, but danger for American buyers.

Very few would disagree with this sentiment.
It would seem to be an issue that a smart politician or political party would grab hold of and run with.
I think the majority of Americans are fat and happy and, therefore, disinterested in the problem....so far.
No matter how cynical I become toward politicians, it's never enough.

Pull out of any trade agreements we have with China. Americans having jobs and safe products is more important than China using our dollars to strengthen their military.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Cicero Marcus Tullius
