This thread was inspired by http://www.debatepolitics.com/polls/189249-purpose-parenthood.html. I was surprised that I was the only person voting for option 2.

And that has what to do with your poll? And the choices available?

As to morality, well, there is nowhere I know of that says being killed is immoral, but sometimes killing others is immoral. But hey, from the survival instinct part of me, better to be the killer than the killed.

I agree with you. Living with that would be hell for you, assuming that you eventually reach the point of conscience, and the human tendency is to do so, as we age, from what I've seen. If you were killed in cold blood, you would have no awareness of it, so that's really a moot point.

?? So you think it's worse to kill in cold blood than it is to BE killed? Worse for who??

A good question. There are situations I would kill, and situations I would be killed in, I suppose.

Morally speaking, in terms of the situation being "one person randomly walks up to the other on the street and shoots them dead", then A is the correct answer.

However, in terms of "some random hollywood series of events has forced me and another individual into the Pit and only one of us get's to walk out", well, I have children - those are responsibilities I cannot ignore. In that case, I'm sorry dude, but my loyalty to my kids outweighs my desire not to have psych issues.

Being killed, mostly because it means you're likely an imbecile who didn't bother to pay attention to where you were and who was around you.

from an ethical/moral standpoint, it is worse to kill in cold blood than to be killed. you have made a conscious decision to murder someone for no legitimate reason.

from a personal human standpoint, it is better to live than to die.

which I would choose, depends on the circumstances. killing someone in cold blood.... would I be caught? If I had to choose between being murdered and spending the rest of my life in prison getting raped in the showers, I think I would probably choose to be murdered. If I could do it and get away with it, I'd probably choose to be a cold blooded killer.

How would being thrown into the Thunderdome change the dynamic of whether you have children to take care of?

So all the murder victims of lifers and death row inmates in prison are just imbeciles or dumb asses?

I probably couldnt live with myself if i killed an innocent person, so i voted that option.

Being killed in cold blood I suppose. There's at least a possibility that I could find a way to come to terms with killing another person and live with myself. If I'm dead, I'm dead and there's just nothing.

Depends whether the other person is a man or a woman or child.

Its a bad question because it could be both are "innocent" and I have to decide which of us lives. It seems everything is declaring the answer is they certainly would be willing to die in the place of anyone and everyone else. I would not.

A plane is headed towards the ground. 1 parachute. I grab it, the other person dies. I don't, I die.

It is so NICE to be on a forum of people certain they would say, "Oh, you take the parachute. I couldn't live with myself if YOU die!" You can't live with yourself if you die either, can you?

Hopefully, you'd still have time to write a note to you children and family explaining how they don't mean jack **** to you so at least they know they meant exactly nothing to you, even less than a total stranger - and that your life with them is so worthless its not worth living anyway.

This one is a no brainer to me. 2 men. I'm one of them. Only one of us can live. I pick me.

You've strayed very far from the OP.

I faced the question of the other guy or me in violent situations more times than anyone would believe in my youth and as an adult. I did not even see there was any decision to ponder about that, never crossed my mind.

I have a right to protect my existence in this lifetime. I have a right to act to prevent or minimize being hurt regardless of the innocence of the other person. I only would only yield that view now to my children and wife who are of a higher status than I.

I suppose at some point I'd yield my life to a large enough number of other innocent people unless all were men (if such as a truly "innocent" person even exists), but not the life of one of my children or wife.

I believe I answered it exactly. The choice is between being killed or killing. I picked survival.

Not making your highest priority instilling a parent's own morality does not mean that isn't the child being moral a goal of the parents.

That isn't what this thread is about.

I chose the first because well, if I had a choice between the two, that seems better. I really don't give a **** if most people live, me on the other hand, I got **** to do.

I would much rather be killed for no reason than have to live with the knowledge that I ended a person's life for absolutely no reason

I would much rather be killed for no reason than have to live with the knowledge that I ended a person's life for absolutely no reason

that's a tough one. I am living with the knowledge that I have killed many people (more than I care to remember) for no other reason than my government sent me to a country and the people there saw us as invaders and were simply, in their eyes, defending their homes.

All things considered though, I'd still rather be alive than dead

Worse how?

Morally for yourself? Killing someone else is clearly "worse".

In terms of effect on you? I'd say being killed would be "worse". While living with the potential guilt of killing someone in cold blood (assuming you have said guilt, given you were capable of killing someone in cold blood), it's still LIVING and you're still able to experience other things during that time.

In terms of morally in a universal sense? They're equal, as both instances are a person being killed in cold blood.

I didn't look at it from a military perspective because (mostly due to destroyed ankles, asthma, hatred of the state, and a full academic scholarship) I'm going to be civilian for the entirety of my life. In terms of military, I'd likely be able to come to terms with myself over it.

Thank you for your service btw
