Fred Phelps is about to die... how should we react?

'Course attending the funeral would also mean having to travel to Topeka, when I'd much rather be in Damascus or Ciudad Juárez.

L hppe he burns in hell. Non Vets can not understand how we feel about this monster.

Since the one laudable achievement to his name will be dying, we should applaud his last ditch success (no pun).

You guys are too kind... I say protest the hell out of that funeral. Make sure to bring your colorful signs with lovely things written on them!.. Maybe, just maybe, they will finally get the pain and suffering they have caused countless other people when one of their own is disrespected in such a way.

No offense intended, but this is just fantasy.

Had to think for a second...

Is he some kind of televangelist?

Shows how good my memory is.

I saw another thread which explains.

To feel quiet satisfaction that a voice of hate has been silenced, and otherwise do nothing.

I finally voted other because I'm thinking about taking a **** on a kitten to celebrate.

I'm not a vet, but I have a pretty good idea that regularly going to soldiers' funerals while holding signs that say "Thank God for dead soldiers" is going to strike a nerve.

For certain Veterans on this thread, who do not speak for the vast majority of Veterans,
to say that non Vets don't know how they feel is egregious behavior.
As the son of a WW2, Korean and Vietnam-era Veteran, I deeply resent being told that I don't know how Veterans feel.
After my Dad retired in 1974, I spent 28 years taking him to Scott AFB, Chanute AFB, Hines VA and Great Lakes Naval for Medical Issues.
And I spent K-7 going to Air Force Base schools, some overseas.

All Americans love everything about our Veterans.
I was at a St. Patrick's Day Parade yesterday in which countless groups of Veterans were paraded on foot and vehicles,
and the crowd was in tears and joy at the same time.

It is high time everyone knocks this garbage off and pulls together as a Nation.
I was so proud of the crowd--we were all Americans in the city of President Lincoln, Springfield, IL .

I say we ignore it. Any attention whatsoever, especially any type of protest, will please the remaining members. I don't want to give them the satisfaction.

We won't, of course, but that's what would be done if it were my call.

I wouldn't give them a platform by protesting. It only results in good material for media coverage, fundraising pitches, and fortifying his supporters and sympathizers reservoirs of righteous indignation. But feel free to be pleased at his passing and say so to whomever asks---he was a terrible man.

Yup. It's kind of sad he'll die without really appreciating that the world was a worse place for him being in it, but that's just how these things go. I saw the Phelps debate on tv a few times, and "crazier than a bag filled with cats" comes to mind. The Phelps had no desire to improve the world, they were fueled purely by hate and their need to see the world turned to chaos. You've got to wonder how two human beings can become so broken.

The guy was and is an attention seeker. I say we ignore him, otherwise he wins.

I am more of a lets get even guy.So I have to say people should protest at his funeral. I would also favor people protesting outside his home chanting "you're gonna go to hell" while he is on his death bed.

I'm pretty sure LGBT people have a pretty good understanding of that feeling!

Not really. Don't forget, NP hates fags as much as the WBC does. It must hurt like hell to have his brother vets treated the same as dirty homos.

There is a special place in hell reserved for this man.

Sad
Just another hatred filled conservative.
But, he is a human being(I think)...
Every day, thousands die, most who have contributed little positive to society ( like me).
They should receive a second or two of silence/respect...Phelps ? 0.01 of a second..

Let decent men set the standards, not scumbags..
No protest
no silence

IMO, that's what they'd want. That would invigorate them. "See? See the evil we have to deal with?!? We need to continue on!"

I think complete silence and zero attention would be the more effective 'get even' tactic.

I'm so with you on this one. I wouldn't protest so much as just sit outside with my trunk open bumping some offensive rap music or something similar just to show some disrespect to this guy who has disrespected so many. I don't show respect to assholes and when I think of what the families of the funerals he protested had to go through, I am not about to keep quiet and give any type of dignity to that jerkoff.

I think creating this thread is counterproductive to your point. I honestly had no idea he was even dying until you started drawing attention to it.
