Given what most people know today...the profound damage caused by "relatively small atomic weapon", a couple of miles or so away from the point of detonation would probably, at the very least, do some serious cremation to everything in the blast range. And I guess that close enough to detonation that the blast would actually evaporate people, places and things.

Again, despite the fear that existed in those days about atomic bombs, I seriously don't recall that kind of devastation hitting home in the minds of most people...especially kids.

I think the reality hit home with me when I was a kid and saw a movie with Mickey Rooney called "The Atomic Kid".

I happen to watch a bit of the destruction of a half-mile wide tornado that came within 2 blocks of our home (in Dallas). I can't remember how many miles that it ran its course. My grandmother finally grabbed me off the front porch, wrapped me in a blanket, put me in our clawfoot bathtub. Our windows were shattered, debris made its way inside our house. And significant size debris was scattered in our yard, along with everybody else's yards along the path. It took us weeks to clean up after that incident and we weren't directly hit. Buildings that were dead in the path of that tornado, and which were similar to school structures at that time, were leveled. I still get a quiver from time to time thinking about that day.

EVERYBODY TODAY knows what the consequences can potentially be. But really, I don't think we really know what atomic weapons are capable of in present time. They can probably make an atomic weapon the size of an iPad that can do the damage done to Japan during WWII. Who knows? All governments lie so much.
Yep very few of us can fathom the power of a 5, 10 or 20 megaton device. Pretty sure I can die happy without one ever being set off over anyone's home

My father has told me about him having to do that as a child in his school. Funny, but sad at the same time.

No point in arguing with someone who's opinions are based on the truth of the book of Revelations, is there?

    Is Russia our enemy?

Or are people just panty-waists that have been brainwashed into fearing everything?
No, we're not, yes, yes and for some yes.

I am beginning to believe that when it comes to the definition of "threat" it really boils down to this:

Any country that's big enough, and strong enough to not be persuaded, coerced, pressured, or threatened into doing what the USofA wants them to do, is a "threat".

I said maybe just because they are the second biggest nuclear power in the world. Not only that, I honestly didn't expect them to do what they did. They spent so much money on the olympics only to piss it away over a piece of land. I do think we should at least pay attention to what they are doing. They aren't like a middle eastern country with no clout. They are the real deal. We have history with these people. I think the possibility of them being a legitimate threat could come back if they don't step back from their current position.

Russia cannot even afford to fuel its Navy enough to project power worldwide. There is zero chance, zero chance at all that Russia could challenge the United States as a the world's most powerful nation.
If the question was could they challenge us, I would have voted no. However, they definitely are a threat to our interests and therefore to us.

Yeah, but guess what - sometimes there are boogiemen. They exist.

If you hate this country so much, why do you live here? You obviously have nothing but contempt for the United States, so much so that you would side with Russia in any dispute. Emigrate somewhere - you'll be much happier living in one of those nice, peaceful countries like Russia or China or North Korea.

So to paraphrase, you actually pretty much agree with what I said, but you so hate to admit it that you'd rather just spout off some neocon-ish nonsense and act like you've made a biting and relevant point.

    Gottcha....
