I was in Ukraine at the time and Putin used every economic lever available to dissuade/blackmail Ukraine from signing the EU Association Agreement.

I'm well aware of that. That was about bi-lateral trade agreements with the EU. Putin offered tri-lateral trade which was rejected by the West.

Putin was terrified that EU goods would flow into Ukraine and undercut his EEU. Putin's warnings were about Russian protectionism.

Russia is very concerned about the effects of Western influence on it's borders. In 1953, Britain was very concerned about the effects of Iran nationalising their oil industry. To protect their interests, along with the help of the CIA, they overthrew the democratically elected government, and installed the Shah. Iran hasn't been a democracy since, and has been quite a problem for everybody. And that's just one example of US interference, hegemony, and imperialism. Your barking up the wrong tree.

    Putins days are numbered.
The world will be a better place when Russians remove him from power.

Putin is today giving Moldova the same economic/military warnings he gave Ukraine in late 2013/early 2014.

Russia deployed troops to Transnistria in 1992 and promised to remove them in 2002. Needless to say, the Russian troops are still there occupying sovereign Moldovan territory.

    Russia’s Next Target

    April 9, 2015

Russian forces on Thursday conducted a drill near Moldova, the small, Kremlin-menaced nation wedged between Ukraine and Romania. According to Russian news agencies, 400 Russian troops participated in exercises in Transnistria, a breakaway territory of Moldova populated by ethnic Russians. They fired 100,000 rounds of ammunition. Moscow has already punished Moldovans for seeking closer ties with the West by banning imports of Moldovan wine in 2013 and Moldovan fruit in 2014—each time on bogus health-related pretexts and each time close to Moldovan-EU summits and accords.

Last i heard he was only unpopular in st petersburg. If he is removed from within it will be due to economic collapse, not cause he's a tyrant who invaded ukraine and oppressed minorities. The russians seem very fond of these kind of "leaders"

He will (if he survives to then) also use the world cup to solidify his power
