I have a office in downtown Bakersfield. It is approximately a 500yards to the nearest trunk line for cable or fiber optic. But I cant get connection to as I am in an industrial area. So I have resorted to fixed wireless broadband as it was better than dialup or what ATT was offering which was dialup. Don't ask me about the prices and restrictions Verizon and the lot wanted for broadband on the cell networks. When I shop for internet I shop for a pipe, not buckets. It seems most of these providers now days only want to sell buckets. Hopefully when the housing track goes in this year behind me they run the feeder lines by me and I will get some good speeds finally.

yeah, the cable company said they would run a line out to my house, if I was willing to pay them $7K. **** that....

I don't really care how it appears to you, I'm just telling you what I know.

I believe my statement to be objective fact and not opinion.

Maybe that's accurate, maybe just someone spouting bull****. He could be located in a huge apartment complex right next to the NOC. His complex may subsidize his connection. There are apartments like that around here too, they pay for the basic speeds/plan and renters can pay a little extra to get the premium plan.

Yeah, could be.

Looking at that list, it looks like there is a correlation between the size of the country and the internet speed. Even with our size, I feel like we have far more economic capabilities than a large majority of that list and we could improve our placement on that list. But what do I know? I'm a liberal so I definitely don't know anything about economics.

*Shrugs*

You've got it good. The idiots here in America don't realize the rest of the Western World passed them by 5 or 6 years ago. Not just internet speed, but quality of life in general. America's pretty much been garbage since 2008.

Usually with little or no money one has to prioritize and with a war you have to spend money where you would not like to spend it. That is the reality of war. What would have been much better is spending that money on the infra-structure of cities. New bridges, freeways, road repairs, inner city renewal, etc. etc. etc.

But when there is no money during a financial crisis one has to pay more unemployment money, food stamps, etc. and if you have that extra money for the war everything else is going to lag behind.

The problem is that with a little more taxation, all these things could get better but with one party unwilling to save a bit money and the other party not willing to increase the tax revenue and you have the unhealthy situation that the US is in. That at least is my opinion.

It's our large vast rural areas that drag down our average speeds here. If you notice, Canada has similar slower speeds in comparison.
I live in a semi-rural area, and we only acquired high-speed internet about....5 years ago?

I would agree with CC from earlier - part of the issue is the large area that needs coverage - I note that Russia and China are below us on the list, and they also have large areas and many persons (esp china) to provide service to.

That's fine but if you take the EU as a whole, it's download speed is faster than the USA's. The EU is a lot bigger in terms of population.

Population is irrelevant. It's area that matters and whats in the area. The US, Canada, Russia, and China have FAR more rural, hard to reach areas than the EU does. Your entire premise is in error.

It's the area that needs to be covered that makes a big difference. IIRC, to get to the size of the US you'd have to start at Moscow. Did you include European Russia and all the countries west and southwest of there in your average? I'd bet good money you didn't.

My speed of 14mpbs meets my demand just fine. Plenty to download videos (which seldom come in faster than 6mpbs) and watch Netflix at the same time.

European Russia is not part of the EU, mmkay? So no I wouldn't include them when I say the EU is faster than the US.

Oh but Russia, Asian and European, is equal to the United States in internet speed. You telling me it's easier to hook up broadband in Novosibirsk Siberia than in rural Alabama?

Uhh.....

Wow. Look at the list again dude.

I know this is off-topic and I apologize for it, but I have to say that it is refreshing to encounter a liberal who knows and admits his limitations.

LOL!!

Not really... just a lame excuse. Most populations live in clusters, which are easy to service if you just try. Of course there will always be those that live in the middle of no where, and there might be more of those in the US and Russia and Canada, but they are a relative statistical irrelevancy when 99% of the population lives in clusters.

It all comes down to investment and willingness to do so by companies and government, and here places like the US and others lower on the list are not willing to do the investment needed because there is no real competition to drive such investment. If you look at the list also, the countries at the top are also countries with lots and lots of choice... something those lower on the list dont have in many areas.

youre my only hope

Well aware of that mmkat? But you obviously were unaware of the area difference since you kept comparing the EU and the US. I thought I'd help you out a little.

You think Novosibirsk is tougher than Fairbanks, Anchorage, or even Butte MT? As far as the Internet goes, those American cities are worse. Novosibirsk is on the Trans-Siberian Railway, which I'd bet good money is also where they ran their fiber optics. No such thing as one main pass like that in America; The closest you might get would be I-70.

What do you figure the Internet is like in Yakutsk?

my oldest son travels all over the world with his job. With the exception of South Korea, he's found that the internet is crappier there than here.....

I think there's no way you can say that the USA is more rural than Russia, since Russia has the largest landmass on earth and a good portion of it is inhospitable. And yes, Novosibirsk is probably a lot tougher than Fairbanks.

Correct. Some people just can't admit that the USA isn't the best at everything. Kind of funny actually.

Exactly. How many people live in those "inhospitable" places? Almost nil.

And yes, Novosibirsk is probably a lot tougher than Fairbanks.
Not even close. Russia's primary east-west conduit runs right through Novosibirsk. How far does the US's main fiber optic line have to detour to get to Fairbanks?

Oh, I freely admit we're not the best and I've been trying to explain why it's that way - besides us being just plain cheap.

um, yeah. Russia doesn't have to provide internet to areas that are inhospitable where people don't live.....

Are they gonna put a spool of fiber cable on the back of a railroad and let 'er rip? Come on, how does having a railroad that runs through Novosibirsk make it easier to run internet cable out there?

By the way, people do live out there, since the area is very resource rich.

um, yeah. Russia doesn't have to provide internet to areas that are inhospitable where people don't live.....

Except that people do live there. It's funny that you're trying to justify why infrastructure in the USA is no better than Russia's.

Me: The EU has a faster average download time than the USA.
You: The USA is more rural, that's why.

Me: Russia is more rural than the USA, yet they have the same download time as we do.
You: That's because it's rural and nobody lives in those areas.

LOL.
