See, I'm worried. Because my oldest son is really, really smart.... but seems to be extremely argumentative. He must have picked that up from his mother.... He may go left just to argue.

The OP's kind of dishonest, isn't it? The question being asked is so blatantly leading as to render discussion effectively pointless.

Who here (besides Tigger, of course) would actually support raising their daughters to be "weak and defenseless?"

My wife and I used to joke, "Our job is to keep our daughter off a stripper pole!" then I found out how much money those girls made....

I've always put it as strong and independent, but appreciates a guy who holds the door for them. Why some think 'women's lib' means no more civility is odd.

If she wants to be treated like a Lady, she needs to look, think, and act like a Lady. If she can't live up to that end of the deal, then Chivalry/Courtesy does not apply to her any more than it would apply to another guy.

That's interesting. Are you calling American a child-abuser?

How many children do you have?

Lots of slack in that- what defines 'look, think, and act like a lady'?

Howsomever even in many warped self delusional fantasies of what some claim is Chivalry men extend many sorts of deferments and courtesies to each other. I've seen men open and hold the door for other men.

Course in the workplace a more egalitarian mindset is common compared to a date or casual encounter in public. I was raised to treat a woman as a lady unless she requests otherwise. To say Ma'am until she asks for a different form of address. Might be a southern thang, you Yankees are a different sort.

My favorite story is this- I held the door for a very punked out young lady and said, "after you Ma'am." She said, "don't call me Ma'am!" in a bit of a huff. I replied, "alright bitch." her friend laughed her ass off.

I don't believe anyone thinks that.

I think the limits of that were pretty well laid out in the 13th Century, when Chivalry and the concept of Courtly Love came to their height.

Maybe other men, but definitely not me.

I work in a secure area. If I hold a door for someone, I'm liable to lose my job. I was raised to treat a Lady like a Lady. Unfortunately there are very few Ladies and far too many Feminists in the female gender these days.

You are proof that some intense feelings of self loathing can be manifested in ways that project all that hatred towards women to the tune of 12000 postings, anyway.
