Should Swat Teams Be Called In For Misdeamenors

Several months ago a SWAT team in Texas was summoned in order to issue a "No Knock" arrest warrant in the middle of the night. The purpose of the raid was to obtain two pot plants and some seedlings which constitutes a misdemeanor amount of drugs in the state of Texas. The SWAT TEAM wanted to confiscate the legally owned guns as well but it's Texas so the police were prevented from doing so.

So is it normal/acceptable for SWAT teams to kick down people's doors in the middle of the night in order to apprehend people for misdemeanor crimes?

There might be an older thread on this.
Apparently, The PD received a tip that the guy was a big time, heavily armed dealer operation that would not be easily arrested. Also, due to the no-knock warrant an officer going through the door was shot and killed because the guy assumed someone was breaking in to rob him and his girlfriend.

A really tragic comedy of errors. The Grand Jury did not indict for murder.. found it justified.; but the guy may due 15 years for two pot plants as I recall.

SWAT Teams are very popular and they are on the payroll so they can be used for intimidation. So, unless they're out Swatting someone, they have nothing better to do. So more common is my guess©.

I'm sure they were hoping for more plants. It only takes 4 oz. for a felony.

Actually most departments are too small to have a dedicated SWAT team just sitting around on the payroll. Burleson County Texas is a rather small county and it was it's Sheriff's department that executed the no-knock. The basis for the no knock was there, pot and weapons. Tragically an Officer was shot, thankfully the rest of his fellow Officers refrained from sending a hail of lead at the pot grower.

Like anything else, it depends on the situation. There are no one size fits all answers. If the police have reason to believe the situation might be dangerous, then there is nothing wrong with calling in a SWAT team.

I don't think it sounds like a crime I would at all want the police doing a no knock midnight raid on let alone with a swat team. It sounds like that community needs a new sheriff.

No. In general I'm against the use of no-knock warrants and I think the fact that they're becoming more and more common is a dangerous trend.

All I can say is......it's Texas.

Anytime I see a headline involving stupid people and Guns....I immediately assume it is from Texas, or Florida.

Anyone who is not prepared to get blown away should never kick down any doors.

Some people respond to forced entries with equal , or greater force.

SWAT teams should only be used in the direst of circumstances.
